In August, in company with the cruiser HMS Norfolk she left Scapa Flow for Bear Island area tasked to intercept German fishing boats, however the mission was aborted due to bad weather.
In September 1940, HMAS Australia was called upon to relieve the cruiser HMS Fiji after that ship had been damaged by torpedo from U-32 whilst escorting a Dakar bound convoy, she narrowly missed being torpedoed herself on the 8th, by U-56, but because of a malfunctioning torpedo, she escaped.
June saw the cruiser escorting convoys in the Tasman Sea and for the remainder of 1941 she was on escort and patrol duties on the South Atlantic station, this period however, included a brief visit to Kerguelen Island, to seek a possible German raider.

 29 April 1944
Some men involved in "Tiger" claim that some landing craft were not told of a one-hour postponement of the exercise and that men began going ashore while the naval bombardment continued.
Whilst pursuing German Elbing class torpedo boats T.27 and T.28 which were based at St.Malo, Tribal class destroyer HMS Athabaskan is struck aft by a torpedo which starts a fire and brings her to a standstill.
T.27 is driven aground by HMS Haida, and then returns to the site of the sinking to find about 100 of Athabaskan’s crew in the water.

At the conclusion of that brief repair period, Bache moved south to Norfolk, Virginia, whence she departed on 6 February as part of the screen assigned to the British aircraft carrier HMS Victorious.
Before embarking on that phase of the huge island's subjugation, however, she joined Abner Read (DD-526) and Beale to conduct a subsidiary mission in the vicinity of the bypassed Japanese base at Wewak where enemy shore batteries were hampering the work of Aitape-based PT boats.
During the two nights between 18 and 20 June, the two cruisers and four destroyers pounded the Japanese stronghold in an effort to dampen the garrison's enthusiasm for an assault on the Aitape defense perimeter.

Blamey, as Australian commander, decided that Wewak should be captured rather than leave the garrison left to wither and die on the vine - again, the decision to assault the place ties into arguments about the 'unnecessary war'.
In April 1944, American forces had captured the airfield and harbour at Aitape, 90 miles west of Wewak.
The 2/4th Battalion supported by tanks drive the Japanese defenders back into the town while the 2/6th Cavalry landed on a beach east of the town from barges launched from the Swan, Dubbo and Colac.

In mid 1952, HMS Vengeance, a Colossus class light fleet carrier, was transferred on loan to the RAN and commissioned HMAS Vengeance.

The 2/6th Commando Regiment had been brought up from Aitape and was training around But for an amphibious attack on Dove Bay, to the east of Wewak.
From the top of Shiburangu it was possible to see as far north as Aitape and southwards to the Sepik River-a distance of about 200 miles.
The inland force was reinforced at this stage by 2nd New Guinea Infantry Battalion, a native unit led by Australian officers and NCOs.

The twin screw motor vessel KANIMBLA was built for McIlwraith McEachern Limited and from May 1936 until September 1939 she operated a passenger service between Cairns and Fremantle.
Upon the outbreak of war she was requisitioned on 5 September 1939 and converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser at Sydney She commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS KANIMBLA on 6 October 1939.
Arriving at Aitape on 1 September, KANIMBLA began preparations for the Morotai landings and on 9 September embarked 1,215 officers and men.

PORT MORESBY: Papua New Guinea's National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) will today move its equipment to Aitape to set a mini-studio for airing news on the tsunami-hit area [which has caused the loss of an estimated 1000 lives], the National reports.
NBC managing director Tony Boski yesterday told a meeting organised by the Sepik community that the national broadcaster was doing this as bringing up-to-date information to the public was its duty.
He appealed to the PNG Defence Force for assistance in transporting the equipment on its patrol boat HMS Buna which would leave for Wewak and Vanimo today.

Japanese ships and positions at Sebang, as part of Operation Cockpit to divert attention from the start of landings at Hollandia, in New Guinea.
This is the first joint naval exercise in the Indian Ocean.
Fifth Air Force B-24s hit Urarom and Manokwari while B-25s, A-20s, and fighter aircraft strike a wide variety of targets around Hollandia, Aitape, Bogia, Uligan, Bunabun, Madang and Cape Croisilles.

No US casualty can be connected to Kuno's death (at least not by me) but what is most interesting is that on the morning of 21 October HMS Australia was heavily damaged and its captain killed when a Japanese aircraft crashed into its bridge.
In March 1944 he assumed command of HMAS Australia and took part in the Hollandia landings and the bombardment of Wakde and Aitape, and the landings at Biak, Noemfoor and Morotai.
Capt Dechaineux died of wounds received during the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines on the 21 October 1944 when a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft struck the ship's foremast resulting in fires on the bridge.

He received commendations for his gallantry during that frigate's engagement with HMS Guerriere on 19 August 1812.
Aylwin took part in the battle between Constitution and HMS Java on 29 December 1812.
The establishment of these beachheads in New Guinea demonstrated the capability of American carrier-based air power to provide ample air support for military operations far beyond the range of the nearest friendly land-based planes.

The Japanese are not yet finished and fight hard against US attempts to break out from their positions around Aitape, on the mainland near Wadke Island, and on Biak, in some cases right through until August 1944.
All this time the Australians are pushing west along the north coast from Madang.
However only now in August, does the fighting die down around Aitape and on Biak Island, still leaving the Australians to finish off the remnants of by-passed Japanese divisions, in some areas until August 1945.

The Task Force sailed on 14 April 1944 for Seeadler Harbour, in the Admiralties, and on the 19th departed to rendezvous with the attack force for the forthcoming operations at Tanahmerah Bay, Humboldt Bay and Aitape.
After this operation WARRAMUNGA and the other ships of the two Task Forces returned to Seeadler, moving to Aitape on 12 July 1944, from whence she departed with AUSTRALIA to bombard Yakasui area, WARRAMUNGA having a Piper Cub as spotting aircraft.
The minesweepers were occupied in sweeping to the north as the Task Unit approached Shiogama, the port of Sendai, and its entry into the harbour was marked with an explosion every few minutes.
