 Royal Navy: History
Renamed HMS Sutherland on 2 January 1716 she was employed as a hospital ship on the Mediterranean Station from May 1741.
In 1759 HMS Sutherland was part of a British Fleet, under the command of Vice Admiral Charles Saunders (HMS Neptune), being assembled at Louisbourg for the expedition against Quebec.
The present HMS Sutherland, built by Yarrow Shipbuilders Limited on the Clyde, was launched on 9 March 1996 by Lady Christina Walmsley, wife of Sir Robert Walmsley.

HMS Albemarle was a pre-Dreadnought Duncan-class battleship of the Royal Navy, named after George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle.
She was laid down on 8 January 1900 at Chatham Dockyard, launched on 5 March 1901, and commissioned on 12 November 1903.

Among the many famous Captains who have served with the Fishery Protection Squadron is Horatio Nelson — who captained HMS Albermarle in 1781, on fishery protection duties.
The ratification of the North Sea Convention of 1883 (an International Convention for regulating the policing of the fisheries in the North Sea) saw the majority of seafaring nations with fishing interests in the North Sea agree to regulations for maintaining good order among fishermen.
In 1891 the gunboat HMS Hearty became the first full time fishery protection vessel.

In 1793 with the outbreak of the French Revolutionary wars Nelson was given command of HMS Agamemnon, and appointed to Lord Hood’s fleet, which was to serve in the Mediterranean.

HMS Anglesey (P277) is one of five Island-class offshore patrol vessels charged with policing fishery protection legislation around the coast of the United Kingdom - an area of around 80,000 square miles.
The normal pattern of patrol is two periods at sea, each of ten days, separated by a port visit to enable the ship's company to relax and recharge their batteries.
Nelson was a captain in the Squadron - in the Albermarle in 1781 - and gunboat HMS Hearty became the first full-time fishery protection vessel in 1891.

They were taken on in return for a debt written off or to pay off an officers bill with a merchant, or as a favour to a senior officer, in a system of interlocking patronage and favouritism.
In 1782, Nelson, the then young captain of HMS Albermarle,sought after the patronage of Samuel Hood, of whom the King had declared to be "the most brilliant officer of the war".

One Middle watch when things were particularly hot and rocket projectiles were bursting overhead and shrapnel landing on the deck, the ship immediately ahead of us in the line suddenly appeared to be moving.

Darwin in Galapagos: on September 15, 1835, the visitor that gave fame to the Galapagos, Charles Darwin, arrived aboard the HMS Beagle, commanded by Captain Robert FitzRoy.
The Beagle spent just five weeks in the archipelago, during which time the 26-year old naturalist was able to visit four of the principal islands — San Cristóbal (Chatam), Floreana (Charles), Isabela (Albermarle) and Santiago (James).
He spent 19 days on land, collecting and observing the flora and fauna of this "living laboratory of evolution," a term often used to describe the islands.

To prove that Roc trainers also operated from carriers a photo in the Public Records Office shows a Roc target tug upended on the flight deck of the carrier HMS Formidable (reproduced in the book "The Fleet Air Arm in Camera 1912-1996" by Roger Hayward).
The two lines behind the landing light on the wing are two small strakes, a permanent feature on both the Roc and Skua, it was to these that the light bomb carriers were attached when needed.
