HMS Ambush, currently being built, and due to be one of the most powerful attack submarines ever made for the Royal Navy, is to be affiliated to the city of Derby.
HMS Ambush is the second of three Astute Class submarines being built for the Royal Navy by BAE Systems Submarines to replace the Swiftsure and Trafalgar Classes on the Clyde and Devonport respectively.
HMS Ambush will be launched in 2009 and is due to enter service in 2011, following Astute which enters service in 2008 and which is affiliated to the Wirral on Merseyside.

HMS Astute will displace 7,800 tonnes dived and is 97 metres long, she will have six weapons tubes a massively increased firepower compared to predecessors and will be equipped from day one to operate cruise missiles.
Construction on the second submarine of the class, HMS Ambush's keel was layed down in October 2003 with the third, HMS Artful's keel layed down in March 2005.

As an Able Seaman forendy, AMBUSH was heaven compared to the last boat I was on.
I was drafted to HMS Dolphin, Fort Blockhouse as a Main Gate Sentry and this was quite a good employment but short lived.
Also who joined was one of the submariners who was on my three's course, there was a bit of a conflict but it was soon resolved and I settled in as the TI to oversee the building and trials of the Forends and Fire Control Systems.

HMS Dreadnought was a fully operational attack submarine and served for 20 years from 1963 before being decommissioned in 1983 and placed in store.

First steel for HMS Astute was cut in October 1999 but the keel (actually the first hull section) was not formally laid down until 31 January 2001.
HMS Astute is currently scheduled to be completed and handed over by BAE Systems to the Royal Navy in August 2008 - a date set by BAE which allows for several months of delays without incurring penalties.
By early 2002 all major components and systems for HMS Astute had been delivered by sub-contractors to the Barrow yard, and material for HMS Ambush was also rapidly accumulating and some fabrication work began.

Submarines named HMS Astute, HMS Ambush and HMS Artful have all been in service before - they where all part of the A Class of submarine that where built during the 1940s.
Artful (built at Scotts of Greenock) was the first to undergo reconstruction followed by the remainder of the A Class with the exception of the Barrow built Aurochs which was the only A Class not converted.
To demonstrate the effectiveness of the snort mast, HMS Andrew completed a record 15-day 2500-mile submerged passage from Bermuda to England, surfacing in the English Channel on the eve of the Coronation in 1953 just in time for the feat to be announced in the same bulletin that reported the first ascent of Everest.
