HMS Prince Of Wales was a King George V-class battleship of the Royal Navy, built at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, England.
HMS Ark Royal (91), was the third ship of the Royal Navy to be named in honor of the flagship of the English fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada.
HMS Duke of York was a King George V-class battleship of the Royal Navy, and the second of the name, the predecessor having been a 4-gun cutter purchased in 1763 and sold in 1766.

The second Anson was a 6-gun cutter purchased in 1763 and sold in 1774.
The third Anson, launched in 1781, was a small two-decker 64-gun third-rate cut down (razeed) around 1794 to a large frigate of 44 guns.
The fourth Anson was a 74-gun third-rate launched in 1812, used as a convict ship from 1844 and broken up in 1851.

At the start of the War of the Austrian Succession in 1739, Commodore George Anson took command of a squadron that was given the task of harassing Spanish shipping on the coast of South America and capturing the Manila galleon, the annual shipment of gold and silver from Mexico to the Philippines.
Believing they might never see her again, Anson and his 113 crew set about to lengthen a small Spanish "bark" in which they planned to sail to China.
Anson achieved flag rank the following year, and Centurion was in a squadron commanded by him at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in which the English defeated Admiral de la Jonquière on May 3, 1747, and captured seven merchantmen, four ships of the line, and two frigates.

In 1722 Anson was raised to the rank of Commander and 18 months later he was promoted to Captain and took command of the Scarborough (frigate).
Anson managed to take several prize ships but had insufficient crew left to man them safely and so had to burn some.
Anson over-reached the galleon, and lay on her bow, where by the great wideness of his ports he could traverse almost all his guns upon the enemy, whilst the galleon could only bring part of hers to bear.

 Battleships in the Gareloch
The first to arrive there was the HMS Anson in November of 1949 followed by the HMS KGV in June of 1950.
HMS Anson was the first to be towed from her mooring in the Gareloch on December 17th 1957 to arrive at the shipbreakers.
The HMS King George V was towed from the Gareloch on January 20th 1958 and sold to Arnott Young and Co, Dalmuir for breaking up.

On his return to England in 1740, he was appointed to HMS Prince Frederick, and later that year transferred to HMS Centurion, under the command of Commodore Anson.
In November 1745, he was transferred to HMS Maidstone, and was employed in sailing in the Soundings and the Bay of Biscay.
In March 1761, Keppel transferred to HMS Valiant and was put in command of a squadron to reduce Belle Isle, which was successfully completed in June.

HMS Anson left Falmouth on Christmas Eve, to join the patrols blockading the French Channel ports.
When the anchors failed to hold an attempt was made to run the Anson ashore - unfortunately hitting one of many rocky reefs and going broadside on 100m away from the shoreline.
The remains of the Anson are still there for divers to see today - just 100m off the beach of Loe Bar, level with the Loe Pool.

On Christmas Eve 1807 the Anson left Falmouth to take up her station on the navy blockade that was keeping the French bottled up in Brest.
On the afternoon of December 28th the Anson was well to leeward of the Lizard and being a cut down third-rate she was not a good sailboat and the Capt. Realised that he was in big trouble.
Ironically it was just a year after the Anson tragedy, in July 1808, that an Act of Parliament was passed requiring that all such bodies be given a Christian burial.

Launched in January 1915, the Revenge-class battleship HMS Resolution was to enjoy a 33 year career during which she served in the Atlantic, home and Eastern Fleets as well as serving repeated spells in the Mediterranean, being both bombed and torpedoed along the way.
HMS Rodney was launched in 1925, like her sister ship the Nelson, Rodney saw action in many theatres, scoring the first hit on the Bismarck among other memorable exploits.
HMS Nelson saw service in he Mediterranean up to 1943, she again saw service off Normandy where she was again mined on 18th June 1944.

It was blowing hard as the Anson made her way down channel, and when Captain Lydiard finally sighted Ushant the storm was so bad that he decided to put about and return to Falmouth.
Luckily its mast fell down and made a makeshift bridge to the shore over which several of the crew managed to scramble to safety, whilst others were pulled ashore by willing helpers from the nearby villages.
The memorial to the dead of the Anson was erected in 1949 and is very easy to find.

HMS Wager was an East Indiaman purchased specifically for Commodore George Anson's ambitious but ill-fated expedition against Spanish Pacific outposts at the start of the War of Jenkins' Ear.
Eventually the latter group landed, too, but the crew gradually broke into a number of factions; some were in a state of mutiny against Cheap's authority while others simply ignored their fellow castaways and went off on their own.
Upon their return, a court-martial was convened to inquire into the loss of the ship, and the mate on duty at the time was reprimanded.

The wreck of HMS Wager, 28 guns, in May 1741 and the survival of a number of her officers and crew is one of the great sagas of the sea.
Many of her crew reached the island safely and as the ship was the store vessel for the Squadron, they were able to salvage sufficient food to exist on the island for many months.
A Court Martial absolved the Captain of blame for the loss of HMS Wager and no action was taken against those members of the crew who had disobeyed his orders.
