In 1982 when the Argentinians invaded the British Falkland islands her next tour of duty was to have been three months in the West Indies, but she quickly adapted to the urgency of the situation and steamed the 8000 miles south as part of the task force ordered to recapture the Islands.
At South Georgia on 21st April 1982 HMS Plymouth took part in the first direct action against Argentinian forces when her Wasp helicopter fired a missile at the submarine Santa Fe as a result of which she was beached by her crew.
HMS ANTELOPE and HMS ARDENT were severely damaged and later sank, and Plymouth was hit by four bombs and cannon fire from attacks by five aircraft.

Antelope had joined the Task Force in company with two other reinforcements, HMS Exeter and HMS Ambuscade, on 22 May. She arrived in Falkland Sound on 23 May and was put in a position in the most open part of the bay as one of the main air defence assets.
HMS Coventry fired a Sea Dart at the pair which missed, then Broadsword's Sea Wolf system was confused by the two aircraft being so close together, so failed to select a target and therefore failed to fire The two Skyhawks dropped four bombs, the first three of which missed.
HMS Broadsword began rescue operations for the crew in the water, while HMS Hermes and the land bases at San Carlos sent a large number of helicopters which took the crew in the liferafts to safety.

 Type 82 General Purpose Destroyer
His early experience was gained as a Midshipman and Sub Lieutenant in the Destroyers HMS Agincourt and HMS Carysfort which took him to the Mediterranean, the Far East and the South Pacific.
In 1982 this squadron became heavily involved in the Falklands campaign where two of its ships, HMS Ardent and HMS Antelope were sunk, and five of the remaining six took part in operations.

The Argentinian air force was 1st rate and had advanced weapons such as the Exocet antiship missile.
HMS Sheffield was the first casualty of the Exocet.
