A buck is an adult male of some animals, such as deer, antelope, rabbits, etc. It can also be a high-spirited young man, which James definitely was.
Well anyway, what I'm getting at is that HMS Thorn and Buck could be foreshadowing both Lily and James' life/destiny, whatever.

I hav done some research and by strange co incidence, there were 10 warships called HMS Penelope.

The master, 61 crewmembers, eight gunners and seven passengers were picked up by trawler HMS Birdlip & landed at Freetown the next day.

If you want bad-ass, google for "Exocet sinks HMS Sheffield" and you'll see "right-there" pictures of a real-life warshot and ship-kill during the Falklands conflict.
Speaking of the Falklands, I recall reading somewhere that the Argentian pilots weren't adequately trained for bombing runs on ships, so as a result they would come in so low that their ordnance wouldn't have to time to arm, and thus would hit the decks of the British ships and roll off
HMS Coventry and HMS Antelope were killed by iron "dumb" bombs (Antelope was also hit by the plane that dropped the bombs).
