Her main objective was to gather military data and to conduct hydrographic surveys off the coasts of Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

From 28 April to 2 May 1940 at Namsos, Norway, HMS Arab survived 31 bombing attacks in five days.
On one occasion during this period Lieutenant Stannard and two of his crew tackled for two hours a fire on the jetty caused by a bomb igniting ammunition.
Later feats included the destruction of a Nazi bomber whose pilot, thinking that he had HMS Arab at his mercy, ordered that she be steered into captivity.

Following a visit to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, HMS Portland has now rejoined the international maritime interception force in the Arabian Gulf, hunting smugglers supporting Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq.
The ship has also received permission from the Earl of Portland to use his family coat of arms on the ship's RAS flag, flown while the ship replenishes at sea from tankers or store ships.
"When I received word that I would be serving on board HMS Portland, I thought it unusual to be going to a ship of the British Navy that had the same name as where I was born, and looked forward to having the opportunity to serve once again with the British Navy.
