HMS Hermes and Invincible were still forced to operate at some distance from the islands due to the threat of Exocet armed aircraft, and there were insufficient Harriers available to maintain permanent Combat Air Patrols over the landing zone at this range.
HMS Antrim was hit hardest, with cannon fire ploughing into her superstructure injuring eight men, one of whom was blinded.
Ardent was in the middle of Falkland Sound at the Southern end, having returned from the successful operation at Goose Green, and was the first ship the Argentine pilots saw as they ran in on their attacks.

Ardents hanger was a shambles and there were fires spreading in her stern.
Ardent continued to burn throughout the night, accompanied by the occasional explosion, until she sank the following morning, with only her foremast remaining above the water.

 Type 82 General Purpose Destroyer
In 1980 he was appointed in command of the general purpose frigate HMS Avenger as Captain of the 4th Frigate Squadron of 'Type 21s'.
In 1982 this squadron became heavily involved in the Falklands campaign where two of its ships, HMS Ardent and HMS Antelope were sunk, and five of the remaining six took part in operations.
HMS Avenger herself conducted several bombardments of the Argentine positions, landed special operations forces and survived a combined Super Etendard/Exocet and Skyhawk bomber attack of which she was the focus.

On the adternoon of Saturday the eighth of June, 1940, the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escorting destroyers HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent were intercepted in the Norwegian Sea by the German battlecruisers Gneisenau and Scharnhorst.
Ardent withdrew, firing torpedoes, one of which was seen to pass close ahead of the Scharnhorst.
Ardent made one hit on Scharnhorst with her 4.7-inch guns, but was extensively hit by return fire from the 5.9-inch secondary armament of the battlecruisers, and sank at about 1725.

On May 21st 1982 the frigate HMS ARDENT came under repeated air attack and was hit several times by bombs and rockets.  On fire and expecting further attacks, the ship was abandoned.  She continued to burn and remain afloat for a further twelve hours before sinking.  22 men were killed and 37 wounded.
