On May 21, 1982, whilst lying in Falkland Sound and supporting Royal Marines, Ardent was attacked by Argentine Skyhawks and struck by nine 500lb bombs, three of which exploded.
Ardents hanger was a shambles and there were fires spreading in her stern.
Ardent continued to burn throughout the night, accompanied by the occasional explosion, until she sank the following morning, with only her foremast remaining above the water.

One common story is that HMS Sheffield, a destroyer sunk during the 1982 Falkland War, was lost because her alleged aluminum superstructure made her more vulnerable to damage.

Problem with the Harrier was if an A-4 got passed, it was hard for the Harrier to catch back up.
That incident (or so I have come to understand) is what lead many to question the efectiveness of the Harrier.
You'll find it quite an eye opener.The Harrier in all its variants can be a handful to fly but the pilots who do so wouldn't swap it for anything else around at the moment.
