Arethusa was built by J.S. White and Company Shipbuilders of Cowes.
In 1970, Arethusa deployed to the Far East and while there, helped escort HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh on their South East Asian tour.
Later that year, Arethusa began her modernisation which included the removal of her one twin 4.5-in gun, with the Ikara anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missile system taking its place.

 HMS Arethusa (F38) 1965 - 1989
The 8th in line to bear the name Arethusa, a Leander class frigate, she was launched in Cowes, Isle of Wight on 5th November 1963.
Bearing the pennant number F38 she was armed with the latest surface, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons and associated equipment.

 HMS Arethusa
The name "HMS Arethusa", like 99% of the ships of the world's Navies in WW2, is not a household name like that of the Hood or Bismark.
However, the events described here meant that to the families of her crew, Arethusa was every bit as important as any Battleship.
The scale of the Naval War meant that so many actions were simply over shadowed by the "big picture", so much so that I recently read in a book about the Malta Convoys that the Stoneage Convoy "reached Malta without incident".
