In 1906 she was allocated to the 1st Cruiser squadron, which was part of the Channel Fleet, and in 1909 joined the UK Atlantic Fleet as part of the 5th Cruiser Squadron.
The third and current HMS Argyll (F231) is a Type 23 'Duke' Class frigate and was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders at Glasgow, launched in 1989 by Lady Wendy Levene, and commissioned in May 1991.
HMS Argyll is currently undergoing Sea Training to prepare for her re-entry back into the fleet, after her second 'Docking Period' in early 2003, in which removing, renewing and fitting new equipment and maintenance was done.

The submarine (ex HMS Upholder) was handed over to the Canadian Navy at the same base on Saturday 2nd October, before losing power in the Irish Sea only days afterwards.
One crew member was killed in the incident, and HMS Montrose was sent to escort the submarine back to Faslane under tow.

The first of the class, HMS Norfolk, was ordered from Yarrows in October 1984, with the final three being ordered almost 12 years later, in February 1996.
HMS Lancaster, the third of the class, was originally given the pennant number F232, but that was changed to F229 as 232 was regarded as unlucky - 232 is the number of the Royal Navy's report form for groundings and collisions.

HMS NORFOLK was the first Type 23 to enter service in the Royal Navy, she was commissioned on 1st June 1990.
The Type 23s are general purpose frigates and so although capable of ASW and air-defence, they are similarly capable of independent action when required.

Argyll successfully completed a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf protecting two oil platforms, working with the American, Australian and Iraqi Navies from February to August in 2005.
Argyll sucessfully completed Operational Sea Training and was recently acting guardship for H.M. Elizabeth II on a week sailing on the Hebridean Princess in July 2006.
Argyll is shortly deploying to Africa commencing early September 2006.

Two Fleet Protection Rifle Teams were deployed to HMS Iron Duke and from the ship to Sierra Leone in March 2003 as part of Operation Keeling.

On 7 September 2005, the government of the United Kingdom and Chile signed an agreement valued at £135 million for the purchase of three ex-Royal Navy Type 23 frigates for the Chilean Navy.
The three ships involved in this deal were: HMS Norfolk, Marlborough and Grafton.
