This convoy was escorted by the Anti-Aircraft cruisers HMS Calcutta, HMS Coventry and 4 destroyers.
Cover was provided by the Mediterranean Fleet (Admiral Cunningham) with the battleships HMS Warspite, HMS Valiant, HMS Malaya, HMS Ramillies, the aircraft carriers HMS Illustrious, HMS Eagle, the cruisers HMS York, HMS Gloucester, HMS Liverpool, HMS Ajax, HMS Orion, HMAS Sydney and 16 destroyers.
While the Mediterranean Fleet was still on the return trip aircraft from HMS Illustrious and HMS Eagle attacked Leros and in the evening of the 14th the British light cruiser HMS Liverpool while south-east off Crete was hit in the bow by a torpedo from an Italian aircraft.

By the end of the World War 2 the strength of the Fleet Air Arm possessed 56 air stations all over the world, the most important was the headquarters of HMS Daedalus at Lee on Solent, with its airfield, bordering the Solent opposite the Isle of Wight and a slipway into the sea.
She was first established in the First World War in 1917 by the Admiralty, and was subsequently transferred to the RAF in 1918.
As of 2001, the airfield was still alive with the search and rescue helicopters of HM Coastguards/Bristows, along with the Defender 4000 of the Hampshire Police Air Unit, aircraft of three glider clubs, along with Hughes aviation and the Catalina Restoration company.

Using lipid-mediator bioinformatics, a new technique for identifying and profiling small molecules, Amiram Ariel, HMS research fellow in anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the paper’s first author, found that human blood cells convert DHA into protectin D1 (PD1).
Ariel and collaborators found that T helper type 2 cells, which regulate allergic reactions and responses to parasites and counteract inflammation-promoting T helper type 1 cells, also selectively produce PD1 from DHA.

 Culcheth Sports Club
Part of the disused naval establishment HMS Ariel West site, which was adjacent to the proposed hostel location, was acquired by the UKAEA after a meeting on 8 October 1956, with a grant of £15,000 from the Central Recreation Committee (successor to the Civil Service Sports Council).
During, and for a short time after the war, HMS Ariel West was a naval camp, and the present Main Hall of the Club was a gymnasium as well as being used for social functions and dances.
The Ariel Lounge in the Club provides a reminder of these war-time connections and the Coat of Arms of HMS Ariel is on display there.

 Biography - Commodore Richard Dale
Jones soon made him the first lieutenant of the Bonhomme Richard, and in that capacity he fought with distinction in the famous battle with the [HMS] Serapis, on 23 September 1779, and received a severe splinter wound [caused by large flying splinters of wood blasted out of the hull by enemy cannon shot].
After the sinking of the Bonhomme Richard in that engagement [with John Paul Jones and his crew capturing the Serapis], Dale served with Jones in the Alliance, and afterwards in the Ariel.
He returned to Philadelphia on 28 February 1781, and was placed on the list of lieutenants in the [Continental] navy, and joined the Trumbull, which was captured in August of that year by the [HMS] Iris and the [HMS] Monk.

I trained as Air Radio Mechanic at Chelsea Polytechnic for 5 months, living in historic Crosby Hall, then 4 months at HMS Ariel Warrington where I was rated Leading Wren.
I was then posted to HMS Merlin, Fife, Scotland - Fleet Air Arm station.
In 1944 I was drafted back to HMS Ariel to the workshops, assembling and instructing and was rated Petty Officer, in September 1945 was given compassionate discharge owing to mothers illness.
