HMS Ark Royal is a name that has been borne by 5 ships in the British Royal Navy.
Originally named Ark Raleigh, she was bought by Queen Elizabeth's navy for £5000 ("money well given", according to her new commander, Lord Howard of Effingham) and, as Ark Royal, was the flagship of the English fleet during the Spanish Armada campaign of 1588.
The second Ark Royal, after a gap of almost 300 years, was a merchant ship converted on the building stocks to be a seaplane carrier and was the world's first aircraft carrier.

HMS Ark Royal (R07), the last Invincible-class light aircraft carrier, is the fifth ship of the Royal Navy named in honour of the flagship of the English fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada.
Her name was originally intended to be Indomitable to be similar with her sister ships (HMS Invincible and HMS Illustrious), but public resentment at the scrapping of the previous Ark Royal (Britain's last large aircraft carrier) in 1980, led the Royal Navy to announce that her name would be revived in a new ship.
Ark Royal is slightly larger than her sister ships and during construction she was fitted with a steeper ski-jump ramp, (12 degrees, as opposed to 7 degrees of the Invincible) to improve take-off performance of the Harrier aircraft.
