She was towed clear by the HMS Eskimo (F 75) and repaired in Tyne from August 1940 until July 1941.
In June 1943, the cruiser took part in the Operation Corkscrew as part of the 15th Cruiser Squadron and bombarded the Italian island of Pantelleria on 1 June together with HMS Paladin (G 69) and HMS Petard (G 56), but was damaged by the Italian coastal defence.
She was returning from bombarding enemy positions during the Operation Shingle, the landings at Anzio, in which she was part of the Gunfire Support Group TG 81.8, comprising of USS Brooklyn (CL 40), USS Woolsey (DD 437), USS Mayo (DD 422), USS Trippe (DD 403), USS Ludlow (DD 438) and USS Edison (DD 439).

These ships are sunk about 75 miles north of Luzon in position 19°45'N, 120°40'E 1944 - Submarine HMS Tally Ho, on her third patrol and cruising the waters around the Andaman Islands, fires six torpedoes at what is believed to be a motor vessel.
She emerged with a radically altered profile and a displacement of 28,000 tons, a top speed of 28 knots, and was armed with ten 12.8-inch guns.

She was helping in the evacuation of troops from Greece, and in the process had picked up, with the help of another destroyer, HMS Diamond, around 700 troops and crew from the 11,600 ton Dutch liner 'Slamat' now converted as a troopship and under British control, which had been attacked and damaged earlier.
The HMS Wryneck and HMS Diamond were both sunk in the attack with the loss of nearly both their crews and all the survivors of the Slamat.
Some survivors were rescued by the escorts HMS Legion and HMS Carnation and taken to Leith, Scotland.

As we anchored in the bay of Naples at 22:00 captain Belben received a signal ordering him to prepare for sea immediately and return to Anzio to take the place of HMS Dido, which had been in collision with a landing craft in Naples bay.
The position at Anzio was so critical not one cruiser could be spared, as every gun was needed to drive back the enemy who was driving our land forces dangerously towards the sea.
At 06:00 on 18th February, a Friday, we left Naples bay and increased speed to 26 knots and then steered a NW course to make for Anzio, zigzagging as she went to avoid possible submarine attacks.
