When HMS Somali was completed, she spent most of January 1939 around Portland England carrying out torpedo and harbour exercises in severe weather.
Around Christmas 1941, HMS Somali, HMS Ashanti, HMS Bedouin and HMS Eskimo took part in another raid on the Lofoten Islands but their assault was curtailed by the presence of the German air force.
HMS Ashanti then took her crippled sister ship in tow, cruising at a slow 7 knots.

HMS Ashanti (F117) was a Tribal-class frigate of the Royal Navy.
Ashanti was also used to trial the Westland Wasp, which would, upon the helicopter start its active service with the RN, have quite a short career, mostly being retired by the 1970s, though some would return to service in response to the Falklands War.
In 1988, Ashanti came to an explosive end, when she was sunk as a target by HM submarines Sceptre and Spartan.

HMS Victorious left the Clyde with the Operation "Pedestal" convoy on 3 August 1942; she left the "Pedestal" convoy on the 10th of August and took part in the North African landings in November 1942.
HMS Victorious was refitted at Norfolk Navy Yard USA, during the winter of 1942-43, after which she was loaned to the US Pacific Fleet until being replaced by the new USS Essex.

HMS Sikh started her naval life with the 1st Destroyer Flotilla (1st D. Her builders trials commenced in August 1938 and after being fitted with a gyro-compass and other equipment at Chatham, England she was completed on 2 November 1938 even though she had been commissioned a month earlier.
HMS Sikh, HMS Gurkha, HMS Afridi and HMS Mohawk were patrolling in the Red Sea when war broke out.
It was then decided that HMS Sikh and HMS Maori should return to Malta, to join HMS Zulu and form the 22nd D.F. This would act as a strike force against Axis supply convoys between Italy and North Africa.

In the early hours of the morning we had changed positions with Somali and were about 120 feet ahead of her when she was hit in the engine room and boiler room by two torpedoes from a U-Boat.
Ashanti immediately swept around and dropped several patterns of depth charges as a mine sweeper went alongside Somali and took off about 100 merchant seamen survivors, 140 Officers and ratings, leaving about 80 other officers and ratings still on board.

While an Apprentice with G and J Weir of Cathcart I worked on Ashanti during her fitting out up until she was ready for sea trials.
I wrote in an earlier posting of a fire that took place in the boiler room of Tribal Class frigate HMS ASHANTI in the Bristol Channel in 1977 resulting in the death of 3 crewmembers.

His early experience was gained as a Midshipman and Sub Lieutenant in the Destroyers HMS Agincourt and HMS Carysfort which took him to the Mediterranean, the Far East and the South Pacific.
In 1980 he was appointed in command of the general purpose frigate HMS Avenger as Captain of the 4th Frigate Squadron of 'Type 21s'.

HMS Eskimo (L-75/F-75/G-75) was a Tribal-class destroyer laid down by the High Walker Yard of Vickers Armstrong at Newcastle-on-Tyne on 5 August 1936, launched on 3 September 1937 and commissioned on 30 December 1938.
HMS Eskimo was reduced to an accommodation and headquarters ship for minesweepers, wreck-disposal vessels, and salvage craft clearing the Thames and Medway estuaries in 1946, used as a target ship in the Gareloch, sold for scrap on 27 June 1949 and broken up at Troon.

My grandfather was killed on the HMS NIGERIA when she was hit by a torpedo during operation Pedastal, they were on the coast of Malta.

Between 29th January and 1st February 1874, three battles were fought at Bormassie (29th), Amoaful (31st) and Becquah (1st) in which one seaman from Active was killed and two of her officers along with seven of her petty officers and seamen were wounded.
On 14th January 1878, 196 officers, seamen and marines from HMS Active were landed at East London, in the Cape Colony, to join the forces fighting in the 9th Kaffir War.
During this period, the men of HMS Active were part of the garrison of Eshowe.
