Thampan Thomas, president and general secretary of the HMS and other leaders said the plantation-sector trade unions would launch a series of agitations shortly to save the sector.
Reddy said the two-day meet was unique in that it was attended by representatives of the planters' associations and marked the beginning of a joint struggle to save the industry.

The countrywide "rasta roko rail-roko" agitation called by all the central trade unions today passed off peacefully barring an unconfirmed report about police having opened fire on agitators at Tinsukhia in Assam and lathicharge at a few places as industrial workers courted arrest protesting the Government economic policies.
Though the BJP-affiliated-BMS was not a party to the call, it supported the `satyagraha' and one of its representatives even addressed a rally here where 10,000 agitators, like in different part of the country including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and West Bengal, courted arrests.
The satyagraha was marked by road and rail blockades besides meetings, marches and rallies where the Government's disinvestment and other economic policies directly affecting that working class and the masses were criticised.

Condemning the Central government's policy of privatisation, the association urged all bank empployees to observe the strike so that the right message could be conveyed to the authorities against attempts to privatise state run companies.

Since the British were unwilling to pay high prices that the Chinese demanded for their tea, they acquired some excellent examples of tea plants and started plantations in the uplands of India, particularly Assam, and in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
They also addressed the refusal of the Chinese to allow them to trade in the interior by importing high-grade opium poppies from the region of Turkey and planting them in many of those areas of southeast Asia where they now flourish.
It took place in the 1790's when the HMS Bounty, commanded by Captain William Bligh was becalmed and running short of water.
