The Astute's will be an improved and enlarged version of the Trafalgar Class, and were originally intended to replace the remaining Swiftsure Class which were launched between 1973 and 1977 and are now approaching the end of their operational life.
First steel for HMS Astute was cut in October 1999 but the keel (actually the first hull section) was not formally laid down until 31 January 2001.
HMS Astute is currently scheduled to be completed and handed over by BAE Systems to the Royal Navy in August 2008 - a date set by BAE which allows for several months of delays without incurring penalties.

Astute was laid down at a ceremony attended by Baroness Symons, the Minister for Defence Procurement, and Admiral Sir Nigel Essenhigh, the First Sea Lord.

Speaking at the keel laying ceremony for first-of-class HMS Astute in January, defence procurement minister Baroness Symons confirmed that the equipment plan now assumed a further three Astute-class boats, but added the caveat that "a final decision on the size of the order will not be taken until next year".
