 The Royal Navy in Operation Allied Force
HMS Bulldog, a coastal survey vessel, HMS Atherstone and HMS Sandown all helped to detect and dispose of ordnance in Operation 'Allied Harvest' surveying all declared jettison areas.
The Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset, and subsequently HMS Grafton who relieved her on 26th April, both served as part of the French aircraft carrier Task Group in the Adriatic.
HMS Iron Duke and HMS Norfolk, also both Type 23 frigates, were deployed to the region as part of NATO Standing Naval Forces patrolling the area and keeping the Yugoslav Navy under constant surveillance.

HMS Atherstone was the first of her class to have a chamber of this type fitted.
Atherstone finally returned to her home port of Faslane on November 29, having spent seven months of the year away from home.
Once repaired, Atherstone returned to the fray once more, sinking two German coasters off the island of Alderney, escorting the damaged Warspite, and rescuing the 63 survivors after the HMS Aldenham had been fatally damaged by a mine in the Adriatic.

Faslane based minehunter HMS Atherstone has had a busy year in 2005.
Atherstone sailed from Portsmouth to conduct initial trials on the new system, firstly in shallow water near Weymouth followed by deep-water trials south of Falmouth.
HMS Atherstone is due to return to sea in November 2005.

MINESWEEPER HMS Atherstone returned to Portsmouth on June 7 after a five-month deployment to the Gulf.
Atherstone formed part of the ten-strong task group which left Portsmouth in January, led by the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious.
The Commanding Officer of HMS Atherstone, Lt Cdr Mark Durkin, said: "We have completed a busy and successful deployment to the Gulf and accomplished all of the objectives which we set out to achieve.

HMS Atherstone's report notes that the SS Clan Campbell also stayed behind to pick up survivors, and that the Rohna burned so furiously that Atherstone laid a smoke screen in case follow up bombers came to finish them off.
The U.S. minesweeper Pioneer and HMS Atherstone were the heroes in this disaster at sea.
One report stated that Atherstone dodged five of the glider bombs during the early part of the attack and observed enemy torpedo planes attempting to mop up at the close of the Luftwaffe phase of the event.

Mr Devlin’s ship, the HMS Atherstone, was following the HMS Aldenham across the Northern Adriatic Sea back to dock after a day of bombardment when the ship exploded into a cloud of smoke.
Mr Devlin recalled, “Most of the men on the HMS Aldenham were below deck when the ship hit the mine—meaning that almost all of the crew were killed.
“How my ship the HMS Atherstone didn’t hit a mine I’ll never know because a month later an aerial photograph of the area showed that there were 40 mines in that part of the sea.

Watching the march were three generations of one Atherstone family - Carol Wykes, aged 47, her granddaughter Holly Grantham, aged two, and Carol's mother, Margaret Wykes, aged 69.
Lt Cdr Richard Pethybridge, commanding officer of HMS Atherstone said: "We are very proud of our association with the North Warwickshire and our namesake town and have always maintained a very close liaison."

My late husband served in HMS Pytchley, I think he told me that James Mason, the film star, was serving too, at one time.
My uncle served on HMS Quorn and was lost presumed missing on 4th August 1944.
