In 1971, Bacchante deployed to the West Indies, and while there, performed a number of naval exercises, which included the carriers HMS Ark Royal and USS America a deployment that has since been replaced by Atlantic Patrol Task (North).
In 1982, Bacchante became the Gibraltar Guardship and subsequently deployed to the South Atlantic to undertake duties around Falkland Islands in the tense aftermath aftermath of the Falklands War.
Bacchante was later decommissioned from the Royal Navy that year, being subsequently sold to the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).

It was launched by the Royal Navy in 1969 as HMS Bacchante and then in 1983 transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy which renamed it HMNZS Wellington.

It was planned that between 1977 and 1984 all the Broad beamed class Frigates would undergo modernisation, with HMS Andromeda being the first in 1977 and being completed in 1980.

Deafening cannons on shore were followed by a series of explosions on the 113 meter vessel, now known simply as F69.
The organizers were worried 40 knot winds might turn the vessel on its side, but the scuttling went according to plan, taking under two minutes for the frigate to sink 26 meters to the sea bed.
The scuttling was originally to take place on Saturday afternoon, but bad weather forced organizers to postpone it for 24 hours.

HMNZS Wellington/HMS Bacchante has been sunk as a dive wreck off her adopted home city of Wellington.
Whilst there must be a tinge of sadness at sinking of our fine ship, I find myself heartened that she will live on underwater, rather than being dismantled anonymously in some Indian breakers yard, or used as a target, as my two previous ships were.
