HMS Gorleston was commissioned into the Royal Navy on May 31st, 1941.
As the former US Coast Guard Cutter “ITASCA” she was one of 10 Lake Class Cutters that were loaned to Great Britain under the Lease Lend Agreement of 1941, and renamed after Coast Guard Stations around the British coast.
While on board HMS Gorleston, this unfortunate cat got into a territorial dispute with a large seagull.

 11 August 1942
The carrier HMS Eagle, escorting the Operation Pedestal convoy, is torpedoed and sunk by U-73 which fires off four torpedoes all of which hit Eagle, 65 miles south of Majorca at 38 05N, 03 02E.
On 18 August, the 11 men in the boat of the first mate were picked up by HMS Banff and landed in Freetown the next day.
The remaining lifeboat was found over 100 miles southwest of Freetown by trawler HMS Canna on 20 August and also landed in Freetown two days later, where the injured man was brought to a hospital where he was found to have a very severe skull fracture in addition to other injuries.

The new HMS Hamilton was damaged in a collision with the new HMS Georgetown and subsequently transferred from the RN to the RCN, becoming the HMCS Hamilton.

Four cutters were on that date being painted the British war color by the United States Navy Yard, in accordance with the request of the British authorities, and, upon completion of the painting, these vessels mould be in all respects ready for transfer.
The last survivor of her class, she was sold on 16 February 1959.

The big problem was that the ship had four names during its history- Saranac, HMS Banff (Y-73), Sebec (WPG-164) and Tampa (W-164).
