The first HMS St Albans was in 1687, a fifty gun ship of the line she fought at Barfleur in 1691 before being wrecked in a gale in Kinsale harbour.
The second St Albans was commissioned in 1706, another fifty gun warship she served in the war against Spain from 1739, mainly in the West Indies.

The first Barfleur was a 90-gun second-rate ship of the line built at Deptford in 1697, and broken up in 1783.
The second Barfleur was built at Chatham in 1768 as a 90-gun second-rate ship of the line, but later had another eight guns added to her quarterdeck, making her a 98-gun ship.
The fifth Barfleur (D80), launched 1943, was a Battle-class destroyer that served in World War II and was broken up in 1966.

This ship is not to be confused with the HMS BARFLEUR that was ordered and laid down in 28 October 1942, commissioned in 1944 and served with distinction in WWII, present at the formal surrender in Tokyo Bay of Japan in 1945.
HMS BARFLEUR was part of Admiral Richard Howe’s fleet at the Glorious First of June, 1794, against France’s Rear Admiral Villaret-de-Joyeuse, when the British defeated the French.
HMS BARFLEUR then flew the flag of Vice Admiral W. Waldegrave at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, fought on February 14, 1797.

She was powered by oil-fired steam engines, which gave her a cruising speed of 12knots, but was capable of speeds up to 32knots on occasions.
After the war, HMS Devonshire became a Training Ship until she was decommissioned in 1953.

 Battle class
An experimental mounting was fitted to HMS SAVAGE, a Troubridge class destroyer, in 1942.
This trial mounting proved satisfactory but suffered some defects one of which (oil leakage through the decks) was never really solved and continued to plague at least one Battle right up until she finally paid off in 1962.
Placed in reserve in 1947, before being commissioned, she was to languish for 23 years before being towed to Portsmouth in 1970 for conversion to become a Sonar Trials Ship.

The ship takes her name from the bastard son of Charles II and Nell Gwyn, Charles Beauclerk, the first Duke of St Albans, who was born barely two decades before the first of six HMS St Albans served the crown.
She was wrecked 12 months later in a storm as she hurried for shelter in Kinsale harbour.
The Dukes were originally conceived as Atlantic anti-submarine hunters for the Cold War which ended as the first two of the class, HMS Norfolk and Argyll, were entering service.

The shipyard survived until 1993 - then trading as Swan Hunter - when it was forced to call in the receivers after the UK government awarded the contract for HMS Ocean to another shipyard, for a cut down price, which later turned out to be artificial.
The ship was based on the design of the HMS Invincible class aircraft carriers, two of which were built at Swan Hunter, but the tender process failed to take note of this fact.
The company was an early manufacturer of Charles Parsons turbine engines, which enabled the RMS Mauretania to achieve its great speeed.

One aircraft arrived on the horizon at 1200hrs GMT and saw the discharge not of the two star red distress flares that had been fired but the smoke from the cartridges and flew over the dinghies, within a very short period of time this aircraft dropped a two way portable VHF radio by parachute.
Contact between the Albatross and the survivors was established and they were advised that a destroyer HMS Barfleur had been dispatched from Malta to pick up the survivors.
The survivors were advised that the if the destroyer had not arrived by sundown, a Grumman Albatross would alight upon the water and pick them up rather than the possibility of losing sight of the dinghies in darkness.
