Berkeley is the name of several places, all eventually deriving from Berkeley Castle in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, UK, from whom the noble family of Berkeley derive their name, and for which several vessels of the British Royal Navy have been christened "HMS Berkeley Castle".
They honour either Sir William Berkeley, governor of Virginia and co-proprietor of New Jersey, in whose honour Berkeley Plantation in Tidewater Viginia was named; or Bishop George Berkeley.
"Berkeley" may refer to the University of California, Berkeley, also known as "UC Berkeley" or "Cal", but should not be confused with Berkeley College, Berkeley College at Yale, or Berklee College of Music.

HMS Indomitable (1907-1922) was an Invincible-class battlecruiser basically a smaller sized replica of revolutionary Dreadnought.
Their larger size and smaller displacement compared Dreadnought as well as their distinct lack armour made her vulnerable to engaging a of larger even smaller warships and the was that the class would face the Fleet in battle one day and so up against Germany's most powerful warships.
HMS Indomitable was placed into Reserve in 1919 and subsequently paid off in 1920 and scrapped in 1922 due to the Washington Treaty.

Edward II, who was murdered foully in Berkeley Castle at the behest of his wife, was attempting to escape to Lundy for safety when contrary winds drove him back to the mainland, and his doom, in 1327.
Some of his contraband was stored in a specially dug cave beneath the castle, which can still be seen today, although with caution- it's on the edge of the cliff.

EMOTIONS were high when sailors from HMS Berkeley paid their final visit to the ship's namesake town in Gloucestershire.
A service at Berkeley Parish Church the next day was attended by the entire ship's company, and it included a reading by Lady Gerken, who launched the ship in 1986.
Afterwards, the sailors exercised their right to the Freedom of Berkeley by marching through the town centre with the Band of the Royal Marines, Plymouth, before the thirsty crew were entertained at Berkeley Castle by John Berkeley.

Great: North Wales and Edward's 5 castles of Caenarfon, Conwy, Beaumaris, Harlech and Cricceth, Warwick Castle, Kennilworth Castle (not far from Warwick, and as a ruin, is a great contrast), Blenheim Palace, the ruined Abbey in a small town named Much Wentlock (this was the found-by-accident highlight of the trip).
Castles: The best are in wales, if you're not going there warwick is great (Incidentally it's owned by madam tussauds, so they can get something right).
The castle there has audio for touring and the on-site cafe was very reasonably priced and the food was excellent without being total gourmet fare (at which any kid would stick his nose up).
