HMS York was one of two York class heavy cruisers built in the late 1920's.
The early years of HMS York were spent on the America and West Indies Station as Flagship to the 8th Cruiser Squadron but she was recalled to Europe in 1935/1936 as a result of the Abyssinian Crisis.
She returned to the America and West Indies station in 1936 and carried out four cruises from her home base in Bermuda prior to the outbreak of war in 1939.

 British Army in Bermuda from 1776 to 1977
Colonel Arnold devised the early massive building and engineering program for HM Dockyard, that led to Bermuda being referred to later as the "Gibraltar of the West." His accomplishments, skills and obvious leadership qualities in Bermuda were such that he was marked for prompt promotion and increased military responsibilities.
The Regiment was in Bermuda in battalion strength from 1868 to 1870.
It was in Bermuda until at least 1864 because the 39th Regimental Band gave a concert in January of that year for amateur dramatics night of children of garrison officers.

Commissioned into war on the 21st of August 1942 she was the last of the eight 'Fiji' class cruisers built and one of six that survived the war.
Her main armaments were made up of four turrets of triple 6"(152mm) guns with four turrets of twin 4"(102mm) guns on the after funnel deck and a further fourteen 40/20mm guns.
BERMUDA commissioned - with a much reduced ships company of just 611 - on the 24th of October 1957 for a 'Home/Mediterranean/Home' commission and off we went south and into the demands of shakedown and snagging before heading - after a short respite in Portsmouth - to Portland to work-up.

BERMUDA was soon clear and heading East through the Mediterranean passing the destroyer CHEQUERS in the dark at 2110.
BERMUDA left harbour as the wind freshened on Tuesday afternoon and by midnight was punching into one of the infamous southerly gales as she headed south and west around the Cape on her way back to Simonstown.
At 2000 on Friday the 14th the anchor was weighed once more as BERMUDA set off to continue zig-zagging her way south-east with more general drills and then into three watches again for DC, Bombardment, emergency steering and general messing drills.

H.M.S. Bermuda was built at Clydebank by John Brown Ship Builders, laid down on the 30th November 1939 and launched 11th September 1941 and completed on the 21st august 1942.
HMS Bermuda joined the Home Fleet once completed and stayed there until 1945 when she went to the Pacific.
She continued in service well after the war and was finally scrapped at Briton ferry in August 1965.

HMS Fife was one of several "County Class" destroyers.
During one "Navy days" weekend HMS Fife went out to sea, from Portsmouth with families on board.
The Victory has been beautifully restored over the years, and is well worth a visit on board if you are in the Portsmouth area, as is the "Mary Rose" and HMS Warrior.

I tried putting HMS Fife in to some of the search engines, but they came up a blank, so this is my effort to remedy that.
We were amongst the last to join at HMS Ganges (a shore base at Shotley Gate, near Ipswich).
My first ship was HMS Kent (another County class destroyer), I have fewer photos from HMS Kent, but given a bit more time I will put some of those on this site.After I left the Kent I had a while up in Scotland, before going on to join the Fife.

On 1 August 1814, the HMS "Tonnant" with Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane K.B. and the frigate "Surprise" with Sir Thomas Cochrane, sailed from Bermuda, destined for Chesapeak Bay.

HMS Bermuda was a Fiji class cruiser of 10,450 tons displacement and completed in 1942.
She was armed with 12 x 6 inch guns, 8 x 4 inch AA guns, smaller calibre guns, 6 x torpedo tubes and 2 aircraft.

 Grandad HMS Bermuda 1941 et seq
Not sure if anyone can help but my Grandads name is Edward Columbine and at 18 years old he served on the HMS Bermuda in 1941.
He also sent letters to the HMS Columbine, as his namesake.
Does anyone know where there still might be survivors or where to find pictures etc. Hes just turned 80 moved house and lost a lot of his old momentos in the process.
