HMS Birmingham (D86) was a Type 42 destroyer laid down by Cammell Laird and Company, Limited, at Birkenhead on 28 March 1972, launched on 30 July 1973 by Lady Empson, wife of Sir Derek Empson and commissioned on 3 December 1976.
Birmingham paid off at Portsmouth on 10 December 1999, was towed to Devonport and stripped of all usable equipment, returned to Portsmouth in May 2000, sold for scrap and left Portsmouth under tow for Spain on 20 October 2000.

HMS Trafalgar completed her 4-year refit in 04/96 while HMS Turbulent underwent a refit from 08/93 to late 97, Tireless from 06/96 to 06/99 and Torbay from 01/98 to 09/01.
HMS Swiftsure began a 30-month refit 05/10/88 but due to reactor problems this was never completed and she was eventually and formally retired in 05/92.
HMS Sovereign completed her 4-year refit at Rosyth 21/09/97 and was de-commissioned at Faslane 11/09/06 and taken to Devonport where she arrived 22/09/06.

She was named for the city of Birmingham, England.
In 1984 she patrolled the Falklands and acted as a radar picket ship along with HMS Broadsword and the rapidly ageing HMS Ajax.
Commanded by Roy Clare, now Director of the Maritime Museum in London, her first deployment post-refit was a tour to the Persian Gulf region, returning in March of 1989.

Since September 2001 the role of the Squadron changed when the IFTU was disbanded and a new unit, the Operational Evaluation Unit (OEU) was formed equipped with the Merlin HM Mk 1 being responsible for delivering Operational Capability to the Fleet.
Originally formed in Jan 1940 at Hatston (HMS Sparrowhawk) in a plan to centralise the operations of the 700 series Catapult flights, around the Scapa Flow base.
It began with 824 Squadron in Apr 1988 and subsequently transferred to 819 Squadron in Mar 1989.

During the Falklands Conflict (1982) this was a major problem as HMS Sheffield was destroyed not by the detonation of the exocet missile, but by the fires that spread through the ship at a rapid rate.
Birmingham was launched by Lady Empson, wife of Sir Derek Empson and commissioned in time to attend the Silver Jubilee Fleet Review, where she served as the 'Admiralty Board Yacht'.
H.M.S Birmingham was the venue of the 1998 St Malo Anglo-French Naval Agreement.

HMS York was one of the last of fourteen Type 42 Destroyers that were built between 15 January 1970 and 9 August 1985 in one batch of six and two batches of four ships.
HMS Sheffield and HMS Coventry were both sunk/destroyed during the Falklands Conflict.

Embarked in HMS Ark Royal (R09) from Nov 1961 and during 1964 on HMS Centaur (R06), it provided support against disturbances in Aden (with 45 Royal Marine Commando from May 1964 in the Radfan) and in Tanganyika (now Tanzania).

The period between Aug 1968 and Aug 1995 was spent with the unit known as 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron (3CBAS qv), although an 847 Squadron did reform at RNAS Culdrose briefly during the Falklands War, seeing service at Port San Carlos and later at Port Stanley before disbanding again in Sep 1982.

The Chief who I think was in fact the OOW aboard HMS Shoreham was a disgrace and the side party (one bosuns mate) for the Second Sea Lord did seem to be a rather poor show for such a senior officer.
The fact that Shoreham was flying a masthead pennant as well as the Vice Admiral's flag must also have had the many ex Ganges signalmen present groaning in their boots but this is a different Navy from the one the majority of us served in.
The Re-union for 2005 has been planned for the 9th July, at the Royal Naval Club in Birmingham this will be a smallish one but from current interest it looks like there will be a few of you old shipmates there.

HMS Sheffield, the lead and name ship of the class was the first to succumb to the daring attacks by the Argentinian Air Force, on the Fourth of May 1982.
However, they will slowly pay off, and HMS Birmingham, who is the most technologically backwards and the oldest is to soon pay off, followed over the next few years by the other Batch 1 ships.
Except for HMS Iron Duke, all of this class are named after Dukedoms, and although these names have come under some criticism for being 'soft' and uninspiring, they are actually far from soft in terms of historical events and figures of importance.

From 1975 through 1985 the Royal Navy commissioned 14 of these ships in three batches featuring varying displacement and minor performance differences.
Six T42 Batch 1 vessels (D80, D86, D87, D88, D108 and D118) were commissioned by the Royal Navy between 1975 and 1979.
