HMS Sheffield and Coventry were lost in the Falklands War to enemy action, this war has been the only time in history where two surface warships of the same design have fought each other.
The Type 42 Destroyer was built to fill the gap left by the cancellation of the large Type 82 destroyer.
The first six Type 45s; HMS Daring, Dauntless, Defender, Dragon, Duncan and Diamond have been ordered, with a further two due to be ordered later in the decade.

HMS Beagle sailed from England on the 27th of December in 1831 and Darwin did not to return to his native land for four years, nine months and two days.
HMS Beagle departed the Galápagos and headed across the Pacific Ocean to Australia, then across the Indian Ocean, and back to England, and the "mixed-up finches" were handed over to John Gould, an ornithologist.
HMS Beagle landed in England on the 2nd of October 1836 and Darwin went to Shrewsbury on the 4th.

HMS E16 disappeared after leaving Blyth in Northumberland in September 1916, carrying a crew of 31 men.
There is a memorial to the submarine service in Blyth market place, but nothing to commemorate HMS Elfin, the name which was given to the town's submarine base.
A Submariners' parade takes place in Blyth on 4 November, and the minehunter HMS Blyth arrives at the town's quayside on 9 November.

Her first operational deployment has proven to be a mammoth eight-month stint away, travelling to the Mediterranean and the Gulf, where she played an important role in the recent conflict against Saddam Hussein, clearing mines from the waterways of the port of Umm Qasr.
It was not just her MCM skills that were called upon in the Gulf, as she was involved in the rescue of four US sailors whose force protection boat had got into difficulties in heavy weather and at night.
This is the second rescue in which HMS Blyth has been involved – in December 2001 she saved the crew of a sinking merchant vessel in the Bristol Channel.
