The first Bristol was a 48-gun ship launched in 1653, completely rebuilt in 1693, captured by the French in April 1709, recaptured two weeks later and sunk.
The third Bristol was a 50-gun fourth-rate launched in 1775 which served at Jamaica in the American War of Independence and then fought at the Battle of Cuddalore (1783) before being used as a prison ship after 1794, and broken up 1810.
The fifth Bristol was the name ship of the Bristol class of light cruiser launched in 1910.

The current HMS Bristol is the seventh ship to bear the name, a title that was also briefly carried by a shore establishment in Bristol from 1942 - 43.
The next Bristol only held the name for two years from 1812-14, changed from Agincourt when she became a prison ship.

Plymouth was where the defeated Napolean Bonaparte was brought aboard the HMS Bellerophon before his exile to St Helena in 1815 and the surviving crew of the RMS Titanic disaster disembarked on their return to England in 1912.
On on December 14 1810, Plymouth was struck by the strongest tornado yet reported in the UK (as of August 2005), with a T8 rating on the TORRO scale, and a wind speed of 213 to 240 mph.

HMS Bristol suffered a major fire in the boilers shortly into her active life but managed to complete the weapons trials on her gas turbines.
She was also the last RN ship built to be steam powered.
