HMS Bulwark, a battleship of 15,000 tons, was moored to No.17 buoy in Kethole Reach on the River Medway, almost opposite the town of Sheerness, Isle of Sheppy, Kent.
The Bulwark inquest was re-opened on December 2nd to identify and establish the cause of death on Stoker Anthony Eames and Able Seaman James Anderson, both original survivors and Reginald Overton a boy.
A verdict of accidental death was returned and the inquiry on the crew of HMS Bulwark was closed.

But the crux of Bulwark’s seven months away from her home port of Devonport will be to deter terrorists, smugglers and criminals from using the sea as a highway, bolstered by Royal Marines from 45 and 40 Commando, plus 539 Assault Squadron, and the Merlin helicopters of 820 NAS.
Bulwark’s theatre will range from the Horn of Africa and northern Indian Ocean and into the Gulf, where she will also serve as flagship for the RN commander in the region and, using her landing craft, will work with Iraq’s Navy to safeguard oil terminals.
Bulwark also played host to Cdr Peter Williams and his staff from the Mine Countermeasures Tasking Authority who used the assault ship’s impressive command facilities to demonstrate that an MCM force could be directed from Bulwark or her sister Albion.

HMS Glatton was built for a foreign Government, and differed in design from any of our own ships in that the magazines and shell rooms for the two amidship 6-inch turrets were placed between the engine room and after boiler room, without any air spacing between.
The wood lining of the magazine bulkhead in HMS Gorgon was removed, and it was found that the paint on the magazine side of the bulkhead was flened and blistered in three distinct and separate places, these places being opposite the pocket used for clinker and ash in the stokehold.
This was in HMS Gorgon, and as HMS Glatton was built and completed at the same time and by the same firm, it is impossible to avoid the inference that the same condition of affairs had probably existed in the latter ship.

HMS Bulwark was built by Harland and Wolff, being laid down 10 May 1945 and launched 22 June 1948.
Bulwark and her sister ship Albion took part in the Suez attacks on Egypt in 1956, but were then converted to helicopter carriers in 1959-60 and 1961-62, respectively.
However, she was recommissioned in 1979 as an anti-submarine helicopter carrier, releasing HMS Hermes from an amphibious warfare role.

The slipway was assembled, triggers were positioned, poppets were constructed forward and aft and 1150 tons of carefully laid chain was attached to Albion to arrest her once she entered Walney Channel after the 15mph journey down the slipway.
Bulwark was laid down on January 27th 2000 and following the launch of RFA Wave Knight in September 2000, the assembly began on the superbeth alongside Albion.
A further milestone in the project was reached on November 15th 2001 with the launch of HMS Bulwark.

HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark also each carry four Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel Mark 5 (LCVP Mk 5), 12 were ordered from FBM Babcock Marine Ltd at the Rosyth Royal Dockyard, near Edinburgh, on the 6 August 2001 in a contract valued at £9 million.

Bulwark will leave the shipyard on Sunday, where she will moor in Ramsden Dock Basin overnight, prior to departure for sea trials in the Irish Sea.
Bulwark is due to arrive in Birkenhead on the 5th June 2004 to complete underwater painting, and any defect rectification.

On 26th November 1914 HMS Bulwark, a 15,000 ton battleship, was moored at buoy number 17 at Kethole Reach on the River Medway.
Five of the 14 men who survived died later of their wounds, and almost all of the others were seriously wounded.
There are mass and individual graves in Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham, for the Bulwark's dead, who were mostly drawn from the Portsmouth area.

While Bulwark was in commission in '58, there were hotbeds of hostility in Jordan/Gaza and later in Oman which we 'quelled' and our Guppies were used to assist in fighter/ bomber directions.
Bulwark is pronounced "Bull-walk" although, at times it does tend to sound a little like "Bull-wok".
One of the more significant features of HMS Bulwark is the Angled Deck.
