HMS Camperdown (1885) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Camperdown was a Victorian era battleship of the Royal Navy, and was the only member of the Admiral class not to be named after an Admiral.
At the time of her building there was in existence an armoured cruiser named HMS Nelson, and therefore this ship was named after one of Vice-Admiral Nelson's victories, rather than after the man himself.
She was a full sister to HMS Anson, and was an improved version of the earlier HMS Howe and HMS Rodney.

Ahoy - Mac's Web Log-Stupidity reigns and then Admirals collide-
The Battleship HMS Victoria, had been launched in 1887, originally to be named Renown, but because she was ready to launch in Queen Victoria's Jubilee Year, she took the name of her Sovereign.
HMS Victoria wearing the flag of Vice Admiral Sir George Tyron led one division, and HMS Camperdown with Rear Admiral Markham, as second in command, led the second division.
Camperdown maintained her answering pennant at the dip, and Markham ordered his signalman to semaphore the Admiral to convey to him that he did not understand the Flagship's orders.

 HMS Camperdown
HMS Camperdown was built at Portsmouth Dockyard and launched on the 24th November 1885.
The guns shown are 6 pdr quick-firers, and their station on the upper deck was in a part of the ship which would undoubtedly have proved one of the "warmest corners" in action.
This picture of a party of stokers on board the Camperdown may recall to mind the sad fate of the stokers of the battleship Victoria, who perished under such terribly appalling circumstances when that ship sank after collision with the Camperdown.

 Their Lawful Occasions
In 1897, HMS Majestic was the Flagship of the Channel Squadron, and Magnificent was the "leader of the second line".
But the casemates, in battleships of the period (from 1885 up to 1915), were positions on the main deck where the secondary armament was mounted, and were the spaces where smoking was allowed.
More probably, this is a reference to the loss of HMS Victoria in 1893, which sank when rammed by the Camperdown, which did, indeed, gouge the Victoria's unprotected end open.

Admiral class battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Royal Navy's pre-dreadnought Admiral-class battleships of the 1880s followed the pattern of the Devastation class in having the main armament on centre-line mounts with the superstructure in between.
This pattern was followed by most following British designs until HMS Dreadnought in 1906.
They were known as the Admiral-class because they were all named after British admirals with the exception of HMS Camperdown.
