The Channel fleet, consisting of the Conqueror, 101; the Donegal, 101; the Algiers, 91, the Aboukir, 91; the Trafalgar, 91; the Centurion, 80; the Mars, 80; and the Diadem, 32, left Portland harbour on Wednesday afternoon for a cruise in the Channel.
The Centurion brings only 10 invalids, who were taken from Lisbon hospital, where they were left by the Channel Fleet; she was ordered to go up Hamoaze yesterday afternoon to make good defects; her crew will be paid down and granted leave of absence.
She was followed by the Centurion, 80, Aboukir, 90, and the Conqueror, 101, which had her studding sails on.

HMS Centurion was a 60-gun ship of the line, 4th rate, of the Royal Navy, built in 1732 and was the third British naval vessel to carry the name.
In 1754, the Centurion, still under the command of Keppel, in company with the Norwich, escorted a large number of troops to North America, destined to assist the colonials in the suppression of the native tribes, who were being given support and encouragment from France to rise up against the English.
The figurehead of the Centurion was a sixteen foot tall lion.

On June 9th a detachment from the "Centurion" proceeded in a Naval Brigade of Mixed nationalities, 2,000 strong, with 19 guns, for the relief of Peking, under Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Seymour.
From June 26th to July llth, a detachment of officers and men from the "Centurion" assisted in the capture and defence of Tientsin, and during this period lost 5 killed and 14 wounded.
In August the "Centurion" contributed a number of officers and men to a British Naval Brigade, which advanced to the final and satisfactory relief of Peking, with 20,100 troops under Lieutenant-General Sir Alfred Gaselee.

 HMS Centurion
In 1900 the “Centurion,” commanded by Captain John R. Jellicoe, and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Hobart Seymour, took part in the third China War or “Boxer Riots.” Sir Edward Seymour was the senior flag-officer of the Eight Nationalities assembled in the Far East, and as such presided over their Councils.
The Centurion is one of the Naval Defence Act Battleships, and a sister to the Barfleur, the fastest battleships afloat in 1896, remarkably fine vessels each of 10,500 tons displacement, mounting 29 ton guns, and bearing armour of 12 inches maximum thickness.
The Centurion was the only battleship in the China seas at this point and the only British battleship permanently stationed outside the Channel and Mediterranean Fleets, was commissioned for this service at Portsmouth in February 1894.

50024 HMS Vanguard was the third member of the "St Vincent" class of WW1 Grand Fleet battleships and ought, therefore, to have been included in the first batch of names alongside "St Vincent" and "Collingwood".
However HMS Leviathan, which gave its' name to 50040, was not built until 1945, at the very end of WW2, and was never commissioned.
The HMS Centurion crests were carried by both 50011 and 50040.

I first went to sea in the Spring of 1964 in HMS Cassandra and finished at the end of 1973 aboard the assault ship HMS Fearless.
Drafted to HMS Hermes which was having a refit in Devonport and then on to HMS Scarborough, Dartmouth Training Squadron.
HMS Scarborough then paid off (finished her commission) and I was then drafted with some other members of Scarborough's ships company to HMS Fearless, which took over the DTS role along with her sister ship Intrepid.

Although the Centurion is a 64 gun ship, you should get a lot of ideas from the ship layout.
HMS Centurion looks like it has the steering wheel in front of the mizzen mast in the overhang of the poop deck, behind that staircase (gangway in nautical terms) on the ships centerline.
