HMS Ceylon had the distinction of being the first of the Uganda class of cruiser, a modification of the Fiji class.
Ceylon nearly saw action for the first time on the return journey when Japanese planes carrying torpedoes tried to attack the fleet, but they were all shot down short of their target by carrier-based fighters.
Ceylon was present at the inauguration of the Maldive Islands as a Republic in January 1953, and a year later she escorted the S. Gothic, which carried Queen Ellzabeth II, from the Cocos Islands to Hobart, Australia.

CEYLON carried out various war patrols, until the Japanese surrender, CEYLON then proceeding to Singapore for the formal surrender of the Japanese in South East Asia to Lord Louis Mountbatten on the 12th September, 1945.
CEYLON was in reserve at Portsmouth until 1950, when she was brought forward to relieve BIRMINGHAM in the East Indies Fleet.
CEYLON recommissioned at Singapore for further service in the East Indies Fleet, and on January 1st, 1953 she was present at the inauguration of the Maldive Islands Republic.

In January 1943, during the night of 22-23rd Force K, consisting of HMS Euryalus, HMS Cleopatra and four destroyers, shelled the withdrawal routes of the German-Italian panzer forces near Zuara Libya, Tripoli was evacuated by the rearguards on the 23rd.
During August, HMS Euryalus, HMS Dido and HMS Sirius with four destroyers, shelled the bridge in the Gulf of Eufemia Calibria, in support of the 8th Army under Lt-General Clarke in the Bay of Solerno, in overall command of the operation was Admiral Cunningham (R.N.) in Malta.
In august 1952 HMS Euryalus was decommissioned, and later during the year she was recommissioned and again rejoined the 1st Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean.

 Chapter 28: HMAS SYDNEY
After spending five months on the British Aircraft Carrier HMS Glory he was in the crew that commissioned HMAS Sydney in which he served for six and a half years including her two deployments off Korea in 1951-1952 and 1953-1954.
HMS Unicorn, wearing the flag of Rear Admiral Scott Moncrieff, DSO., arrived at Kure on 28 September, and HMS Alert, with the C-in-C Far East Station, Vice Admiral, the Honourable Sir Guy Russell, KCB, CBE, DSO, was also in Kure for two days.
HMS Constance, one of the destroyers we had been operating with, was hit while bombarding shore installations on 16 December.

She was requisitioned by the Admiralty and renamed HMS CEYLON, seeing service in the Mediterranean and the Dardanelles from June 1915 to May 1916.
On 1 June Ceylon relieved the cruiser PHOEBE patrolling with a number of Indian sloops between the Mergui Achipelago and Port Blair in the Andaman Sea to prevent the evacuation of Japanese troops and supplies.
She was to be part of a cruiser squadron consisting of Jamaica, Newfoundland, Ceylon and Orion, escorting the Carrier Force Bulwark, Albion, Theseus and Ocean carrying troops taking part in Operation Musketeer Revise, the response of Britain and France to the nationalisation of the Suez canal by Egypt.

HMS Hood, the ‘Mighty Hood’ as she was popularly known in the Royal Navy, was the largest warship in the world when she was commissioned in 1920 and became a symbol of British Naval strength in the inter-war years.
Of HMS Hood herself, all that remained on the surface was a morass of floating debris and an oil slick 4" deep.
HMS Hood contained 380 telephones at the time of her loss and had 3,874 electric light fittings.

The heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire is brought up to sink the blazing wreck of the Bismarck with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941.
she was part of the class which included HMS Norfolk, (two other ships were planned but were cancelled in 1930, they were to be HMS Northumberland and HMS Surrey) She carried a seaplane in1 931 and had a catapult added in 1932.
In1942 HMS Dorsetshire went to t he eastern Fleet and was bombed by Japanese aircraft of West of Ceylon and sank, 5th April 1942.

The next day we were lined up before the Commanding Officer and given a bit of light hearted dressing down with the hope that we would all soon be returning to the UK.
On leaving the station I was sent to join the crew of HMS Colossus a fleet carrier in Colombo harbour.
We sailed to Trincomalee one of the worlds great natural harbours and we anchored well out from the shore.

 102 (Ceylon) Squadron - Pocklington Town Council
On the same day 102 (Ceylon) squadron moved into Pocklington where they were to stay until September 1945.
It is estimated 150 members of the 405 RCAF were killed in action whilst stationed at RAF Pocklington.
Surviving members of the 102 (Ceylon) Squadron hold annual re-unions at Pocklington where they are fondly remembered.

All this haste was so we could catch HMS Ceylon in Hong Kong, before returning her to Korean waters.
The ship was the aircraft carrier HMS Unicorn but she could only take us as far as Japan where we joined the headquarters ship HMS Ladybird in Sasebo harbour, tied to the jetty permanently.
This was on the aircraft carrier HMS Vengeance.

 HMS Kenya
On the 13th July, Kenya, a Fiji class light cruiser, was brought forward for a major refit that would enable her to relieve HMS London on the Far East Station.
Captain T. Podger RN, was appointed in command for next commission, on 20th May, and Kenya flew the flag of Rear Admiral Scott-Moncrieff, and covered HMS Ceylon, which had landed a raiding party on the west coast of Korea behind enemy lines.
HMS Kenya did have one casualty who was killed at the Chosin, Petty Officer Tate.

Albert Edward Pryke Briggs, MBE, (born 1 March 1923), is a British seaman and the last survivor of the tragic destruction of the battlecruiser HMS Hood during combat against the German battlecruiser Bismarck.
After loss of Hood he was assigned to HMS Mercury and also paricipated in teh inquiry into the loss of Hood.
In 1975 Briggs joined the HMS Hood Association as one of its youngest members and was elected as its first President.

McSweeney was brought to Malta on HMS Childers in February for his Court Martial on the 25th and 27th February 1837, on board HMS Revenge, which was moored in Grand Harbour.
The Court heard how McSweeney joined HMS Rodney when she was first commissioned in 1835, and that he was quartered at the after main deck Quarter, under the charge of Lieutenant Payne.
HMS Rodney was being refitted in Port Mahon, Minorca, when ordered to proceed to Malta for the express purpose of McSweeney’s execution.

John joined the navy in December 1944, and in November 1947 to October 1948 was dental officer aboard HMS London during her cruises from Hong Kong to Saigon, Singapore, Borneo, and Manila, and then to China and Japan, just prior to the Yangtse incident of the following year.
In 1956-57 he was dental officer on HMS Ceylon during her involvement in the Suez crisis, the independence celebrations in Ghana, and the handing over of the Simonstown Base in South Africa.
During his time in the navy he was commended in the reports of his commanding officers for his high professional competence, his administrative skills, his prowess on the hockey field, squash court and golf course, and his excellent social skills.

Six survivors were rescued by HMS Derbyshire and landed at Gourock 1941 - At 0246, the Sitoebondo, dispersed from Convoy OS-1, was hit by a torpedo from U-371 after they had witnessed the sinking of Shahristan about one hour earlier by the same U-boat.
The attack gave the Finnish Government the official reason for the severing of the diplomatic ties, and the fact was made public on 1 Aug 1941 - Submarine HMS Cachalot mistakes an Italian torpedo boat for a tanker in poor visibility.
The 28 survivors, including the U-boat captain, were picked by the gunboat USS Saucy (ex HMS Arabis) 1943 - U-604 attacked by a Liberator aircraft (VB-129) on 30 July and both the IWO and the Boatswain were killed in action.
