She was built by the famous Harland and Wolff company of Belfast, and was the last ship to be built there for British naval forces until RFA Fort Victoria of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, was launched in 1990.
In 1990, Charybdis was on Eastern Mediterranean Patrol during the build-up to the First Gulf War.

The Broadbeamed Group of Leander frigates HMS Andromeda, Hermione, Jupiter, Scylla, Charybdis, Achilles, Ariadne, Diomede and HMS Apollo were designed with a view for increasing their life span for future modifications an extra 2 feet were added to the beam which increased stability and endurance with a slight reduction in speed.
It was planned that between 1977 and 1984 all the Broad beamed class Frigates would undergo modernisation, with HMS Andromeda being the first in 1977 and being completed in 1980.
