 | | Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in December, 1970 General Quinlan was ordered to Naval Flight School, Pensacola, Fla. Designated a naval aviator in April, 1972 he was assigned to HMA-269 at MCAS New River, N.C. to fly the AH-1J Cobra. |
 | | During his tour with HMA-269, General Quinlan completed a Mediterranean deployment with HMM-264 aboard the USS Guadalcanal during the 1973 "October War" and two Caribbean deployments with HMA-269 aboard HMS Bulwark in 1974 and HMS Hermes in 1975 for exercise Rum Punch. |
 | | In addition to various squadron duties, General Quinlan served as an aircraft commander and flight instructor, and graduated from Naval Justice School, Newport, R.I., prior to leaving active duty in October, 1975. |
