On 1 August 1798, British fortunes in the war against Napoleon were boosted with Nelson's defeat of the French fleet during the Battle of the Nile at Aboukir Bay.
The 74-gun British vessel, the Colossus, had been badly damaged a year earlier, so she played no active part in the sea battle, although she was carrying all-important stores for Nelson's fleet.
The use of the Colossus for the transport of these antiquities was just one aspect of the unusual friendship between these 'tria juncta in uno'.

 Nelson's Third Rate Ships of the Line
In 1805, before Trafalgar, HMS Colossus was one of the inshore squadron watching the combined French and Spanish fleets at Cadiz and passing intelligence from the frigates outside the port to Nelson’s fleet waiting further out to sea.
HMS Colossus was towed into Gibraltar by HMS Agamemnon and returned to England for repairs on 19 November 1805.
One of the quartergunners on HMS Colossus was Edward Saul.

Though Colossus was involved in much bitter fighting, her Scots captain, John Monkton, ordered his kilt-wearing piper to proceed to the maintop mast staysail netting and play the pipes throughout the battle, no doubt to the bemusement of the French sailors that witnessed it.
In the aftermath of the Battle of the Nile, Colossus was used as a transport, ferrying wounded soldiers from both sides, as well as captured treasure during the battle.
The same year, HMS Colossus, while anchored at St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly, a strong gale occurred, her anchor cabled parted and the ship ran aground.

On February 14, 1797, while on blockade of the Spanish coast between the Tagus and Cadiz, Colossus was severely damaged at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, where Admiral Sir John Jervis with 15 ships of the line overwhelmed a Spanish fleet of 13 ships of the line and 14 frigates.
Following the Battle of the Nile on August 1, 1798, Colossus was used to transport the wounded, both British and French, as well as the treasure taken from the defeated French fleet.
Colossus went ashore on Southward Well Rock, and the next morning all but one man were rescued.

HMS Colossus was larger then the average British two decker, and was reclassified from 74 to 76 guns due to her heavy armament in which 24 pounders replaced 18 pounder guns.
Passing on, Colossus engaged the Spanish Argonauto (74 guns), and was then also fired at on her opposite side by the Spanish Bahamas (74 guns) and the Swiftsure again.
Colossus was towed into Gibraltar by HMS Agamemnon and returned to England for repair on the 19th November.

In 1797 HMS Colossus commanded by captain George Murray was one of a fleet of 15 ships and 7 small craft commanded by admiral Sir John Jervis with his flagship HMS Victory.
HMS Colossus while tacking into action, had her foreyard and foretopsail yard shot away in the slings, and her foretopmast went a little above the cap.
In October 1798 HMS Colossus commanded by captain George Murray was one of a squadron under Rear Admiral Lord Nelson with his Flagship HMS Vanguard which took part in the Blockade of Malta, then occupied by the French, and on October 28th the neighboring and dependant island of Gozo capitulated.

HMS Hermes was coverted to an Anti-submarine Carrier and fitted with a 'Ski-Jump' for Sea Harriers.
HMS Glory arrived in the Far East too late to take part in active combat during World War Two although she accepted the surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea in 1945 and participated in the operation to repatriate ex-Japanese POWs following the war.

I am trying to trace an officer named Aleander Fletcher who was serving aboard HMS Colossus at the outbreak of the war.
Alexander Leslie Fletcher, LT seniority 1 April 1908, was assigned to COLOSSUS on 19 November 1913.
In 1931, he was appointed inspector of east Scotland division of HM Coastguard based in Aberdeen, hence the address there.

HMS Colossus was Built by Scotts of Greenock and launched on the 9th of April 1910 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on the 8th August 1911.
HMS Colossus joined the 2nd Division of the Home Fleet and the 2nd Battle Squadron between May and December 1912 and in August 1914 she became Flagship to the 1st battle squadron.

She was commissioned by the Bishop of Newcastle on 16th December 1944 as HMS Vengeance under the Command of Captain D.M.L. Neame, and moved to the Tyne Commissioning Quay.
Captain D.M.L. Neame RN, Captain D.S.O. Farrer RM HMS Vengeance was destined to form part of the British Pacific Fleet's 11th ACS (Aircraft Carrier Squadron), Light Fleet Carriers under the Command of Rear Admiral Harcourt and including HMS Colossus, HMS Glory and HMS Venerable.
Between 29th March to 18th November 1949, HMS Contest, was a C Class Destroyer, whose duty was to be guard destroyer 'chasing' aircraft carriers to pick up any ditched pilots, HMS Illustrious and HMS Vengeance were two of the carriers involved.
