The first HMS Cornwall was launched in 1692 as an 80 gun third Rate Frigate.
The fourth HMS Cornwall was a 9000 ton armoured cruiser of the Monmouth-class, launched at Pembroke in 1902, and commissioned in 1904.
The fifth HMS Cornwall was a 9750 ton Kent-class heavy cruiser, launched at Devonport in 1926.

So it was fitting that nearly two decades later and following an extensive refit which took Cornwall out of the front line for 12 months, the frigate made the short trip from her home in Devonport to that very same wharf where she was formally welcomed into the bosom of the Senior Service in 1988.
Shipwrights and engineers at DML spent 11 months (and £13m) revamping the frigate for the next chapter of her career, carried out a general upgrade of the ship and her combat systems during the overhaul, systems which spent the winter being tested both alongside and at sea.

Cornwall has undergone a brief period of maintenance at home in Devonport and returns to FOST for a full ‘workout’ early next year before she conducts her first major deployment since a refit earlier this year.

USS Monterey, At Sea - Sailors from USS Monterey (CG 61) took the opportunity June 23 to swap places with British sailors for a night aboard the British frigate HMS Cornwall (F99), while operating together in the North Atlantic Ocean during the Neptune Warrior course.
A total of 19 officers, chief petty officers and a variety of Monterey’s enlisted personnel spent the night aboard Cornwall as the Monterey welcomed aboard 13 British sailors for tours, dinner and recreation overnight.
While aboard Monterey, Cornwall Sailors were given running mates to take them around the ship and ensure they felt comfortable and were given everything they needed.
