HMS Cossack (L-03/F-03/G-03) was a Tribal class destroyer laid down by the High Walker Yard of Vickers Armstrong at Newcastle-on-Tyne on 9 June 1936, launched on 8 June 1937 by Mrs.
Cossack participated in the Second Battle of Narvik in April 1940 and in the pursuit and destruction of the enemy German battleship Bismarck in May 1941.
HMS Cossack was struck by one torpedo fired by the enemy German submarine U-563 as she escorted a convoy from Gibraltar to the United Kingdom on 21 October 1941 which killed 159 of her crew.

HMS Cossack was lost on the 24th October 1941 having left Gibraltar escorting a convoy to England.
Cossack was at the rear of the convoy on the 23rd Oct when a torpedo from U-563 hit just forward of the bridge killing Captain Berthon and 158 of his officers and men.
HMS Cossack did not sink as a result of the torpedo, but was lost in bad weather as an attempt was made to tow her back to Gibraltar.

HMS Zulu and HMS Sikh's final operation together was the attack on Tobruk, Libya on 13/14th September 1942.

HMS COSSACK, the most famous of the British Tribals, had an embarrassing debut at Portsmouth England on 12th June 1938, when she dented her brand new bows coming alongside the jetty.
Four men were killed in COSSACK and ZULU had to send across a party to free one of the casualties trapped in plating, which had been curled back by the impact.
COSSACK was sent for repairs to Leith, England thus missing further action.

HMS Sikh started her naval life with the 1st Destroyer Flotilla (1st D. Her builders trials commenced in August 1938 and after being fitted with a gyro-compass and other equipment at Chatham, England she was completed on 2 November 1938 even though she had been commissioned a month earlier.
HMS Sikh, HMS Cossack, HMS Maori and HMS Zulu left the Clyde River to escort another troop convoy through the Western Approaches.
It was then decided that HMS Sikh and HMS Maori should return to Malta, to join HMS Zulu and form the 22nd D.F. This would act as a strike force against Axis supply convoys between Italy and North Africa.

The HMS MAORI was one of the ships to recover the survivors from the German battleship.

Subject: Re: HMS Cossack The photo of the tribal "with her bow knocked off" is actually of Eskimo after the second battle of Narvik.
Cossack in February 1940 appears to have been painted in overall dark grey AP507A, with the same colour used on the decks not covered with corticene (which has a milk chocolate colour).

It was not long before I was drafted to HMS Skate, a WW1 destroyer being refitted at Hull.
In fact my time on operational boiler work was about two - three weeks as a stoker in HMS Cossack in 1940.
Each boiler had its own funnel, this was a different layout to the Cossack which had three separate boiler rooms with two funnels.
