  HMS Coventry (D118) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Coventry (D118) was a Type 42 destroyer of the Royal Navy laid down by Cammell Laird and Company, Limited, at Birkenhead on 29 January 1973, launched on 21 June 1974 and commissioned on 20 October 1978.
Coventry participated in the Falklands War in 1982 where she became the first Royal Navy warship to fire the Sea Dart and Sea Skua missiles in action.
Coventry was struck by three bombs from an enemy Argentine aircraft, capsized and sank off the Falkland Islands on 25 May 1982 with the loss of 19 of her crew.

HMS Argonaut and her company were adopted by the City of Coventry after HMS Coventry the Ceres Class Light Cruiser had been sunk in September 1942 off the cost of Egypt by German JU-87 dive-bombers.
On December 14th 1942 HMS Argonaut was hit by two torpedoes from the Italian Submarine Mocenigo and was badly damaged with both her bow and stern blown off.
HMS Hero developed problems with her engines and was detached by the Admiralty on April 9th and the Argonaut was left on her own to cross the Atlantic.

Antelope had joined the Task Force in company with two other reinforcements, HMS Exeter and HMS Ambuscade, on 22 May. She arrived in Falkland Sound on 23 May and was put in a position in the most open part of the bay as one of the main air defence assets.
HMS Coventry fired a Sea Dart at the pair which missed, then Broadsword's Sea Wolf system was confused by the two aircraft being so close together, so failed to select a target and therefore failed to fire The two Skyhawks dropped four bombs, the first three of which missed.
HMS Broadsword began rescue operations for the crew in the water, while HMS Hermes and the land bases at San Carlos sent a large number of helicopters which took the crew in the liferafts to safety.

Should be noted that on the 25th of May, HMS Coventry was in the missile trap to the north west of the task force and had controlled Sea Harriers throughout the day and shot down three aircraft herself (SeaDart).
Ironically HMS Broadsword's SeaWolf had a lock on the aircraft that bombed the Coventry, but as the aimer was about to launch Coventry actually came across Broadswords bow in an attempt to provide a much smaller target the for skyhawks.
Coventry's SeaDart achieved a solution, fired, and missed and Coventry was hit by 4 1000lb bombs.
