HMS Cumberland is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey SM1A gas turbines, two Rolls-Royce Tyne RM3C gas turbines and four diesel generators providing a top speed of 30 knots and a range of 4500 miles at 18 knots.

In October 1939 HMS Cumberland was a member of Force G part of the hunting group searching for the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, her allocated search area was along the east coast of South America.
In company with HMS Cornwall and two sloops they she was summoned from the South Atlantic to proceed to Freetown and on the 16th September whilst patrolling south of Dakar she intercepted and sunk the French merchantman, Poitiers (4,185 tons), which was sailing for the Ivory Coast loaded with ammunition.
In December, Cumberland was once agian tasked to find the merchant raider Thor which had given the armed merchant cruiser HMS Carnavon Castle a severe pounding south east of Rio de Janeiro, the search proved unsuccessful.

HMS Cornwall was added in January 1938 but it was replaced by HMS Cumberland in March 1939.
When HMS Ark Royal was commissioned the squadron was allocated to it, in November 1938, becoming the first unit to land aboard it in January 1939, however, the Squadron was transferred to Admiralty control on 24 May 1939.
In that month the squadron was allocated to HMS Courageous as a deck landing training unit and on the hand over of the FAA to the Admiralty it had been planned to re-number the squadron in the second line series as No 768, but instead it was absorbed by No 767 on 24 May 1939.

At the outbreak of world war two, HMS Norfolk served in the Home Fleet in 1939 till 1945 t she took part in the final action against the Bismarck firing 527 8-inch shells and eight torpedoes.
HMS Norfolk also took part in the action against the Scharnhorst, she was hit by two, 11-inch shells, one of which went through the X ring bulkhead and went overboard without exploding.
HMS Norfolk and HMS Belfast of Force I are shown engaging the Scharnhorst which has already been hit and disabled by both HMS Duke of York and the cruiser HMS Jamaica.

He sent his orders out on December 3: Ajax and Cumberland were to seek and capture the SS Ussukuma, a German freighter in the area capable of resupplying German raiders.
Following this interception on the 5th, where the German ship was intercepted but managed to scuttle itself to avoid capture, Cumberland would return to Port Stanley in the Falklands to perform refit and repairs to herself as best she could due to boiler problems.

Taking over from HMS St Albans north of Suez, where the usual handover steam-past was accompanied by several hundred gallons of seawater (and the odd egg), Cumberland – nicknamed the Mighty Sausage – proceeded through the Suez Canal to the first of many operational patrols.
Cumberland’s rugby and football teams were kept busy, enjoying the experience of playing in the Middle East.
