  Bute Maritime Memories
In September 1942 HMS Varbel was commissioned at Port Bannatyne (the Hydro) as the shore base for X craft midget submarines of the 12th Flotilla, a further base was established in Loch Striven as HMS Varbel II.
HMS Bonaventure was completed as a depot ship for the X craft in January 1943, she moved temporarily to Loch Cairnbawn for the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in August 1943 before taking the 14th Flotilla of X craft to the Far East in February 1945.
HMS Adamant moved with her submarines to Faslane on the Gareloch in October 1957 thus ending the permanent RN presence in Rothesay Bay.

On the 14th of May he is 'spare crew' at HMS Cyclops, a depot ship at Rothesay and on the first of July he joined HM Submarine Sunfish.
From Mac Brodie the membership secretary of the HMS Ganges Association I learned that Tom joined HMS Ganges, the boys' training establishment at Shotley in Suffolk on 3 September 1935 and was in Rodney Division, 240 class, 15 mess.

My grandfather was then tacken to HMS Braganza, another sort of 'transit camp' There he worked in the vittling office, organising the food supplies.
He was sent away before the monsoon and posted to the ex-liner Llanstephen Castle for a while.Then it was back to Chatham before finally being posted to HMS Cyclops.
Cyclops was stationed in Weymouth at the time and my grandfather served on her for around 2 weeks before she was taken to be decomissioned and finally scrapped.

He served in the RN in 1915, when he sent a postcard to his family, from HMS Cyclops, of his wife JESSE and two sons.
His last known address given by the RN to a living relative was Cedar Dale Ontario Canada.
