HMS Devonshire (Capt. R.D. Oliver, DSC, RN) was flying the flag of the Senior Officer when an entire Vichy French convoy was captured east of the Cape of Good Hope.

Once Devonshire was within sight of the merchant ship, to frustrate any submarine attack, she manoeuvred to keep a distance of between 12,000 and 18,000 yards away, maintaining a speed of 26 knots with frequent alterations of course.
By May 1942 Devonshire was in the Indian Ocean as part of ‘Operation Ironclad', the invasion of strategic ports in Vichy-held Madagascar, and in the follow-up to this operation she escorted troop convoys, including the giant Cunarder Queen Mary, between Suez and Simonstown.
Devonshire's first training cruise began in autumn 1947, when she visited the Irish port of Berehaven (Castletown Bere), in the beautiful setting of Bantry Bay on Ireland's south coast, the visit being hosted by the Irish Naval Service.

HMS Sheffield, a modern computerised Type-42 destroyer, had been returning to Portsmouth from a patrol in the Arabian Gulf, her crew looking forward to some well earned R and R. She was the second ship to bear the name.
A third HMS Sheffield, built on Tyneside and commissioned at Hull, was launched on March 20th 1986 at a cost of £180 million, sister of another ship named after another lost in the South Atlantic, HMS Coventry.
The crew of HMS Sheffield have always refuted claims that the destroyer was `asleep' when an exocet missile struck it in May 1982, killing 20 men.

Night of 15th February he was involved in a fight with Robert Dewhurst (sailor from HMS Britannia).
He was a Lieutenant (HMS Active) at the destruction of a Turkish squadron in the Dardanelles in 1807; served on HMS Spartan, in boat actions in the Adriatic, and at the reduction of Zante and neighbouring islands.

HMS Fife was shipshape and Bristol fashion that day and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, especially as I'm ex-US Navy and a destroyerman for life.
Served on HMS Fife (D20) March 1982-85, I remember being crash drafted to the Fife (Banana Boat) from a cushy job at PCG in HMS Vernon at the start of the Falklands only to find she was still in refit.
There was a good documentry series here on HMS Brilliant and a run she made through the Med probably back in the late 80's early 90's It is sad to realise the old ships are either scrap or sold to third world navies especially the leanders and the County Class.

By far the most crucial "command decision" to allow HMS Glorious to leave early and sail back was the one taken by Vice-Admiral (Aircraft Carriers) Wells on board H.M.S. Ark Royal.
H.M.S. Glorious in Norway 1940 shortly before she was sunk by Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.
Glorious soon came within the range of the main guns of the German ships and it was not possible to avoid being hit by enemy fire due to the distance being closed because of this.

ON THE AFTERNOON of Saturday the eighth of June, 1940, the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escorting destroyers HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent were intercepted in the Norwegian Sea by the German battlecruisers Gneisenau and Scharnhorst.
In the Royal Navy radio was known as "Wireless Telegraphy," or W/T. Large cruisers of the older classes, such as Devonshire, were usually equipped with two long-range transmitters, a Type 36 main transmitter of 5kw output and a Type 37 secondary transmitter of 1kw output.
At the time of the action Devonshire's W/T department was in two watches, with both her Main W/T and her Remote Office listening on the high and low frequencies of both Home and Narvik areas.
