Evaluation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The diamonds recovered from sampling are weighed and the weight used to calculate the grade in carats per unit volume or mass (carats per cubic metre, ct/m3, or carats per tonne, ct/t).
The selection of a diamond recovery plant is influenced by the size and nature of the sampling program, the availability of suitable equipment and experienced personnel to run the equipment, and the local conditions of climate and logistical support.
Final diamond recovery in the field from the concentrates produced by jigs, pans or HMS plants are usually by either hand sorting, jigging, grease tables or X-ray sorters, or a combination of one or more of these methods.

Historical Encyclopedia of WA - WA Snapshots
It was not until 1976 that the first significant diamond discovery was made at Ellendale, 140 kilometres east of Derby in the Kimberley, where exploration revealed approximately fifty diamond pipes, but they too were considered to be uneconomic for a mining operation to be established.
The delay in diamonds being discovered in WA was due in part to their atypical occurrence within lamproite rock rather than kimberlite geological formations as found elsewhere.
Mining of the main Argyle diamond pipe began in 1985 and has proven to be the most prolific source of diamonds in the world, although the majority are of an industrial rather than gem quality grade.
