HMS Dido (F104) was a Leander-class frigate of the Royal Navy (RN).
Dido was launched on the 22nd December 1961 and commissioned on the 18th September 1963.
In 1983, Dido had a brief stint with STANAVFORLANT before, due to defence cuts, she was sold to the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and was renamed Southland, becoming the third RNZN Leander in the process.

During August, HMS Euryalus, HMS Dido and HMS Sirius with four destroyers, shelled the bridge in the Gulf of Eufemia Calibria, in support of the 8th Army under Lt-General Clarke in the Bay of Solerno, in overall command of the operation was Admiral Cunningham (R.N.) in Malta.
In august 1952 HMS Euryalus was decommissioned, and later during the year she was recommissioned and again rejoined the 1st Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean.

Dido, Euryalus, Naiad, Phoebe were in the 1936 program, Bonaventure and Hermione in the 1937 program, Charybdis, Cleopatra and Scylla in the 1938 program and Argonaut in the 1939 program.
Ensign Two has pictures of Dido taken in 1940 and 1947 clearly showing open galleries and a picture of her taken in 1945 with the area closed off with a series of vertical lines or panels at the appropriate location.

In 1873 the “Dido” was similarly successful in settling a number of difficulties which had arisen in Fiji between the natives and the white settlers.
In 1874 the “Dido” was present at the formal transfer of the Fiji Islands to the British flag, and was so unfortunate as to introduce measles among the native population, which resulted in a lamentable loss of life.
