HMS Dorsetshire (pennant number 40) was a heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy, named after the English county (now called Dorset).
Dorsetshire was able to recover only 115 of Bismarck's crew from the sea, before being forced to evade a suspected U-boat.
Of Dorsetshire's crew, 234 men were killed in the attack; more than 500 survived in the water or on rafts to be picked up by the cruiser Enterprise and the destroyers Paladin and Panther the next day.

Dorsetshire served in the Atlantic and Home Fleets between 1930 and 1933, before a period on the Africa Station from 1933 to 1935.
War with Japan brought her back to the Indian Ocean, and in March 1942 she was undergoing refit at Colombo, this being halted on the approach of a Japanese carrier force at the end of the month.
Dorsetshire sailed with Cornwall to join the Eastern Fleet off the Maidives, but on 5 April 1942 she was sunk south-east of the islands by Japanese carrier-borne aircraft, together with her consort.

The original HMS Dorsetshire was built in the 17th century, and the most recent ship of that name used her last torpedoes to sink the crippled German destroyer the Bismarck in May 1941.
HMS Dorsetshire sank with the loss of more than 200 men after being bombed by Japanese aircraft while trying to defend British naval bases in the waters off Ceylon on April 5, 1942.
But 500 men survived, and there is still an HMS Dorsetshire survivors' association today, which will be holding a reunion on the 60th anniversary of the bombing in Plymouth next year.

Over the years I have heard fragments of the story of the Dorsetshire and her sinking but with the advent of the internet, I have been able to develop more detail including pictures, all of which I have shared with my mother.
I am hoping to locate survivors from the Dorsetshire who may remember my Uncle Warren, so that I could possibly put them in touch with my mother via email or gather their personal accounts to be included with all materials gathered in this research.

Hms Dorsetshire had 2 torpedo trays of 4 tubes each; one tray on each side of the ship.
The nitpick here is that the movie shows 6 torpedoes being fired at the same time when the HMS Dorsetshire could only fire 4 in the limited time it had.
