She was launched on 18 July 1929 and completed on 27 July 1931.
At the end of February 1942 she was damaged in the Battle of the Java Sea when she received a hit in the boiler room and was subsequently ordered to Surabaya.
When she attempted to reach the Sunda Strait, she was intercepted by the Japanese cruisers Nachi and Haguro on the morning of 1 March 1942 and badly damaged by gunfire and a torpedo from the destroyer Ikazuchi.

HMS Dorsetshire (pennant number 40) was a heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy, named after the English county (now called Dorset).
In 1942 Dorsetshire was assigned to the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean.
Of Dorsetshire's crew, 234 men were killed in the attack; more than 500 survived in the water or on rafts to be picked up by the cruiser Enterprise and the destroyers Paladin and Panther the next day.

Right after commissioning in 1930 HMS Dorsetshire was the flagship of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron Atlantic Home Fleet, serving along her sister ship HMS Norfolk, and the slightly smaller heavy cruisers HMS York and HMS Exeter.
From 1933 until 1936 HMS Dorsetshire served on the Africa Station, and her first recorded docking in the Selborne dry dock Simonstown, South Africa was on 5 January 1934.
Dorsetshire was responsible for rescuing the survivors after expending 254 shells and 3 torpedoes of which 2 hit finally sinking the battleship.

On 5 June 1941 HMS London in company with the destroyer HMS Brilliant while operating in the supply area off the Freetown-Natal route, intercepted the German supply tankers Esso Hamburg and Egerland which were hurriedly scuttled by their crews.
During April 1945 HMS London whilst still operating in the Indian Ocean was involved in the shelling of Sabang (operation “Sunfish”).

She was intercepted by minelayer HMS Adventure on Apr. 10-1943, and was scuttled to avoid capture, 43 18N 14 26W.
Every effort was made by the ship's company in HMS Glasgow to rescue the Regensburg's personnel, but, owing to the effects of icy water and heavy weather, only six out of a large complement survived.
Among her trophies are a pair of silver mounted carvers made from the trotters of a German pig called "Tirpitz" which was picked up after the sinking of the Dresden in 1915 by the Glasgow of the last war.

HMS Powerful with her sister ship HMS Terrible made up the Powerful Class of large cruisers.
HMS Powerful was launched 24th July 1895 and proved to be an expensive ship and spent most of its time in the Royal Navy Reserve.
She was renamed HMS Impregnable in November 1919 and sold for breaking on 31st August 1929.

In World War II, she was commanded latterly by the famous hero, Captain Augustus Agar V.C. In late May 1941, Dorsetshire was one of the ships which engaged the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic.
In the Indian Ocean raid, Dorsetshire and her sister ship Cornwall were attacked by Japanese dive-bombers 320 km southwest of Ceylon on 5 April 1942.

H.M.S Dorsetshire, a County Class Cruiser was launched at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1929 by the Countess of Shaftesbury.
The Dorsetshire was sunk on the 5th April 1942, by a Japanese carrier aircraft, three hundred miles west of Colombo, Ceylon.
My grandfather's uncle, Joseph Austin, served on the Dorsetshire, and went down with her on April 5th 1942.

HMS Devonshire was a County-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy, that served in World War II.
Devonshire was laid down by HM Dockyard at Devonport in Plymouth on 16 March 1926, launched on 22 October 1927 and completed on 18 March 1929.
Devonshire was sold for scrap on 16 June 1954 and arrived at Newport on 12 December 1954 where she was broken up by Cashmore\'s.
