Dumbarton Castle took over as Flagship of MCMFORNORTH – Mine Countermeasures Force North – on May 24 last year, when Cdr Adrian Cassar assumed the post of Commander of the NATO force at a ceremony at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth.
By the time she is relieved as flagship, Dumbarton Castle – which has spent a good deal of her time over the years as resident patrol vessel for the Falkland Islands – will have spent almost 250 days at sea.
Dumbarton Castle herself provides other key members of the small team – Staff Executive Officer Lt Paul Daly, Staff Navigator Lt Lyndsay Netherwood and Engineer Lt Pete Young are all co-opted from the ship.

The Castle class has taken it in turns to rotate duties around the Falklands – three years in the South Atlantic, three years based in the UK – for the past two decades.
Although the core of Dumbarton Castle’s time is spent around the Falklands, she pays regular visits to the more remote dependency of South Georgia (about twice every three months) and occasional ones to the South Sandwich Islands.
As ‘Falklands guardship’ – as she’s commonly referred to – it is Dumbarton Castle’s duty to protect the islands and the UK’s territorial waters, including fishery stocks, oil and gas installations, to a 200-mile limit.

 HMS Clyde (P257) Information
She was launched on 14 June 2006 in Portsmouth Naval Base by VT Group shipbuilders in Portsmouth, England and is the fourth vessel of the River class and the first of the batch 2 variety with a displacement of 1,850 tonnes and a 30mm gun.
HMS Clyde was the first ship built entirely in Portsmouth Naval base for 40 years and has been constructed along side the bow and superstructure sections for the new Type 45 Destroyers HMS Daring (D32) and HMS Dauntless (D33).
Upon commissioning into active service she will be sent to the South Atlantic to relieve HMS Dumbarton Castle as the Royal Navy's patrol vessel in the area based in the Falkland Islands.

HMS Sheffield and Coventry were lost in the Falklands War to enemy action, this war has been the only time in history where two surface warships of the same design have fought each other.
The Type 42 Destroyer was built to fill the gap left by the cancellation of the large Type 82 destroyer.

Dumbarton Castle and her sister, Leeds Castle, have alternated in Falkland Islands waters, but the greatly increased reliability that will be delivered by the new ship, both through design and a tailored maintenance regime, means that she will be the only ship needed in future and both 'Castles' can be disposed of.

Following qualification at HMS DRYAD in 1981, he served as a Principal Warfare Officer in the newly built frigate HMS COVENTRY, deploying with NATO's On Call Force Mediterranean and to the Gulf region.
He returned to sea in HMS CARDIFF as Anti-Air Warfare Officer and Operations Officer for a busy appointment which included hurricane relief and counter narcotics operations in the Caribbean, and embargo operations in the Adriatic.

The Castle Class were designed as purpose built Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) to either relegate the aging Ton Class vessels to coastal waters or replace them altogether.
Although no hanger is provided, refeuling facilities are available and allow the helicopter to operate at sea for longer periods of time without needing to return to base.

The HMS 'Dumbarton Castle' arrived at ASMAR Talcahuano Shipyard on May 8 to undergo different maintenance work, such as, calibration of air valves, cleaning of bilge at engine room, painting of waterline fringe, among others.
Her main mission is patrolling the area of the Falkland Islands and also transports supplies and oil for other vessels operating in the zone.
The maintenance activities at the shipyard shall end on May 15, when the HMS 'Dumbarton Castle' will return to her normal operation.

The Navy were not alone in their visit, a contingent from the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) were embarked for the patrol.  They were landed from the ship to conduct patrols of the areas surrounding Cumberland Bay and Stromness.
As summer progressed through South Georgia and the snows melted, some quite old pieces of ammunition were revealed, so DC took an Explosives team with them as well and disposed of the offending articles so that future tourists can enjoy the whole area as well as passing yachts.
HMS Dumbarton Castle is on her way back to the Falkland Islands as you read this, to continue her duties on station in the South Atlantic.  No doubt you will see us around.

“HMS Dumbarton Castle” drops anchor as she approaches the KEP jetty.
In a new venture the ship, which is owned by VT Group, will be on charter to the Ministry of Defence for five years after which the MOD will have the choice to return her, extend the charter or purchase her outright.
The main track to Grytviken was closed for days, which coincided with the Navy and BAS ship visits, forcing the visitors to use boats to ferry their people across the Cove to visit Grytviken.
