 HMS Dunkirk (D09) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Dunkirk (D09) was a later or 1943 Battle-class fleet destroyer of the British Royal Navy (RN).
She was named after the dramatic, and at times, tragic and heroic Evacuation from Dunkirk between late May and early June 1940, in which over 300,000 British, as-well as French troops, were rescued by a ragtag fleet of ships.
Instead of returning home to the UK from the deployment's culmination Dunkirk deployed to the Mediterranean where Broardsword, a Weapon-class destroyer, and of the 7th Destroyer Squadron, which was based in the Mediterranean, had experienced some engine problems and therefore had to be replaced.

H.M.S. Bideford was also saved from the beach at Dunkirk after being towed back home by the Locust; the Sloop Bideford had her stern blown off during a sustained air attack.
H.M.S. Mosquito however was not so fortunate, she was sunk with great loss of life on 1st June after being bombed by JU87 Stuka dive-bombers off Dunkirk Mole.
HMS Dragonfly sank in the shallow waters of the Riau Archipelago (her wreck is still there and has become a dive site) and HMS Grasshopper, heavily damaged, managed to beach herself.

On 28th May 1940 HMS Intrepid arrived at Dover to take part in Operation 'Dynamo' the withdrawal of the British Expendiary Forces from France and Belgium.
On 29th May she landed 661 troops at Dover but on her return trip to Dunkirk she was damaged by air attack, with two killed and 19 wounded, HMS Intrepid had to return to Dover.
On the morning of 26th September 1943 HMS Intrepid received a direct hit during an air raid on Leros and sustained damage amidships.

In spite of HMS Ramillies' severe damage there were no fatalities on board and injuries were limited to one broken arm and some bumps, bruising and concussion.

Of the nine ships that were built, only HMCS Ottawa survived the war, 3 being hit by mines in 1939 - 41, two being lost during the Dunkirk evacuation (HMS Grenade to aircraft and HMS Grafton to the U-62).

He was born in 1890 and joined the Navy in 1905 at the age of 15.
