HMS Dunraven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Dunraven was a Q-Ship of the Royal Navy during World War I.
Dunraven made smoke and sent off a panic party (a small number of men who "abandon ship" during an attack to continue the impersonation of a merchant).
British destroyer HMS Christopher picked up Dunraven's survivors and took her in tow for Plymouth, but Dunraven sank at 1:30 am early on August 10, 1917 to the north of Ushant.

The Admiralty was also increasingly nervous about mines, which had sunk the light cruiser HMS Amphion off the Thames Estuary the first week of the war, and much more significantly sending the battleship HMS Audacious to the bottom of the Irish Sea on 17 October.
On 27 May, Hersing similarly crept up a second old battleship, HMS Majestic, and after patiently waiting for a chance to attack, sent her to the bottom with a single torpedo as well.
Dunraven was camouflaged as an armed merchantman and had a small deck gun that was visible to the U-boat, and the gun crew traded shots with the U-boat for some time.

June 1917 she was about 90 miles off the south coast of Ireland in pretty rough weather when she was hit by a torpedo from a U-boat that blew a 30ft hole in her side, flooding the engine and boiler-rooms, destroying the starboard lifeboat and killing one of the stokers.
Her replacement was another Cardiff ship, the Dunraven, 3,100 tons, built in 1910, which Campbell soon set about modifying and with many of his old crew, including Seaman Williams, the Dunraven was soon sailing the Bay of Biscay disguised as a steamer of the Blue Funnel Fleet.
Her crew held fast, making no attempt to put out the fire, but they could no longer remain disguised when the 4inch gun was hit and catapulted over the bridge and down into the well deck while its crew were tossed into the air.
