The master and 45 crewmembers were picked up by HMS Marguerite & landed at Freetown on 6 June 1941 - Gravelines, a straggler from Convoy HX-127, was torpedoed by U-147 NW of Bloody Foreland and broke in two.
The afterpart of the Gravelines sank and the forepart was towed to the Clyde and beached at Kames Bay on 3 June.
On 1 June, they were picked up by HMS Pict after being located by aircraft and taken to Freetown, where the wounded men were taken to a hospital ship.

Whilst on A/S duties in the Bay of Biscay sloop HMS Egret is attacked by 13 Dornier aircraft one of which released an Hs.293 glider bomb.
When the smoke of the initial explosion cleared, all that could be seen of Egret was her upside down bow section.
Egret was thus the first ship to be sunk by a guided missile.

They scored the new weapons¼ first success with their first launch ‚ destroying the sloop HMS Egret, which exploded and capsized when the fire started by the missile's direct hit reached the aft magazine.
Ironically, the existence of the HS293 had already been reported to the Admiralty, and the Egret was carrying a number of "boffins" who believed they knew the frequency that was to be used, and who were attempting to jam the guidance signals.
With their second attack one of the destroyers, HMCS Athabaskan was set on fire and stopped by damage from a near-miss (after the attack it was able to get under way, and returned to port at fifteen knots).

My Grandfather was also on the Egret and was sadly lost when it was sunk in 1943.
It would be great to see the photo's as i am trying find out about the crew that may of known my grandfather.
I had an uncle Felix Gatt Maltese steward who once told me that at the beginning of the war was on the Egret on the North Sea patrols.

Some of the men on this photograph have names of ships on their hats:- HMS Pembroke, HMS Trooper and HMS Implacable and I was searching the internet for further clues and information about these ships.I have been told that my granddad was at Scapa Flow during WW1, and also Belgium.
Comments: My father was a HMS Eagle survivor and used to recant his memories of the experience often, we subsequently lived in Malta when I was a child.
I tried HMS Centurian but only got a brief history of his service career and a lot of it was missing.
