In September 1942 HMS Varbel was commissioned at Port Bannatyne (the Hydro) as the shore base for X craft midget submarines of the 12th Flotilla, a further base was established in Loch Striven as HMS Varbel II.
HMS Bonaventure was completed as a depot ship for the X craft in January 1943, she moved temporarily to Loch Cairnbawn for the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in August 1943 before taking the 14th Flotilla of X craft to the Far East in February 1945.
HMS Adamant moved with her submarines to Faslane on the Gareloch in October 1957 thus ending the permanent RN presence in Rothesay Bay.

HMS Emerald was built by Armstong and laid down on the 19th May 1920 and completed in January 1926.
HMS Enterprise was built by John Brown on the Clyde laid down on the 28th June 1918 and launched on the 23rd December 1919.
HMS Emerald served on Atlantic Convoy duty 1939 to 1940, then to the East Indies 1941 -- 1942 and moving to the eastern Fleet 1942 to 1944 and in 1945 moving to reserve fleet.

 Boy Seaman Training Establishments
HMS Caledonia (ex-HMS Impregnable, a one-time 98-gun second rate) opened in Scotland in the Firth of Forth at Queensferry in 1896 while the ironclad HMS Black Prince was established at Queenstown (Cobh) in the same year.
In 1906, HMS Ganges was moved ashore near Shotley on the Suffolk coast.
The original vessel was replaced by HMS Winchester in 1861 and, proving too small, this hulk was in turn replaced in 1876 by the old first rate HMS Nile.

HMS "Caledon," 4,120 tons, built by Cammell Laird in 1916 and was converted for use as an A.A. Light cruiser.
HMS "Caradoc," built by Scotts 1916 and HMS "Calypso," built by Hawthorn Leslie, 1917, all converted as HMS "Caledon." The three ships measured 450ft x 43ft and were armed with 5 x 6-inch guns and 2 x 3-inch guns before conversion.
With the exception of HMS "Curacoa," of 4,290 tons, all the ex cruisers are of 4,200 tons displacement, carrying a complement of from 400 to 437.

In october 1861 HMS Emerald encountered severe gales by the Newfoundland banks when transporting Armstrong guns and associated stores to Halifax for the ships of the North America and West India squadron.
The principals of the various departments connected with the Devonport Dockyard went at noon in the steamtug Pike to the Emerald in the Sound, to survey her defects.
It appears that the frigate, which left Spithead on the 5th of October, encountered on the 10th, 11th, 13th, and subsequently a succession of heavy gales from north-north-west to south-south-west, from the effects of which she was compelled on the 22d to put back, being then in lat.

HMS Argonaut and her company were adopted by the City of Coventry after HMS Coventry the Ceres Class Light Cruiser had been sunk in September 1942 off the cost of Egypt by German JU-87 dive-bombers.
On December 14th 1942 HMS Argonaut was hit by two torpedoes from the Italian Submarine Mocenigo and was badly damaged with both her bow and stern blown off.
HMS Hero developed problems with her engines and was detached by the Admiralty on April 9th and the Argonaut was left on her own to cross the Atlantic.

On the morning of 8 November 1942 at Algiers, HMS Broke had been ordered to break through the boom, enter the harbour and land a party of soldiers whose orders were to take and hold selected positions until the main landing force arrived.
HMS Zetland overseeing the landing of troops immediately made to place herself between the batteries and HMS Broke, made smoke and dropped smoke floats, all the while returning fire with her 4inch guns.

The old "Impregnable" ended her days first as a tender to "HMS Indus", then as a hulk under the name of "HMS Kent" to be brought into use in the event of an epidemic.
The 56-gun "HMS Winchester" was built at Woolwich but was lent in 1861 to the Marine Society and moored at Liverpool, where she was re-named the "Conway".
HMS Fisgard closed in 1983 and training was transferred to HMS Raleigh.

HMS Black Prince was built on the Clyde and at the time she was the largest ship built there.
In 1903 her name was changed to “Emerald.” She eventually became “Impregnable III.,” and acted as part of the boys Training Establishment at Devonport.
The seventh “EMERALD” was a 9210-ton ship which had been launched at Glasgow as a broadside ironclad in 1862 under the name of “Black Prince.” In 1903 her name was changed to “Emerald,” and she acted for some years as training ship for the Irish boys at Queenstown.

O’Conor was the captain of the ill-fated HMS Neptune when she was sunk by mines off Tripoli, Libya on the night of 19th December 1941.
He was a cadet in Osborne and Dartmouth Naval Colleges from 1911 to 1914, he was a midshipman in the Battleship HMS Prince of Wales from 1914 to 1917.
He was a sub-lieutenant in the Destroyer HMS Walpole from 1917 to 1918.

HMS Titania in 1937 (left) and possibly a little earlier (1930-35) with the 6th Flotilla.
HMS Wolfe was a former Canadian Pacific liner, launched 1920, and originally named Montcalm.
Not actually a wartime submarine depot ship, but in 1947 HMS Mull of Kintyre was moored further out in the bay as the base ship for a series of explosion trials carried out in Loch Striven and lasting into 1950.

The wooden screw frigate Emerald was only commissioned once - from 14 May 1859 to 7 November 1863, by Captain Arthur Cumming.
After visiting Bermuda, Barbados, Jamaica, Navy Bay (Panama), Greytown (Mosquito coast) and Havanna in Emerald, Milne transferred his flag to HMS Nile at Bermuda on 4 June, and Emerald returned to Plymouth on 4 July.
Manned the yards and fired a Royal Salute on the Prince of Wales embarking on board HMS Hero [Albert Edward (Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, and the future King Edward VII), was then 19 years of age, and en route to Newfoundland, Canada and the United States.

Based on information obtained from a gentleman in England who's father served about the HMS Enterprise and had received a plaque in recognition of his role in rescuing Emperor Sellassie, it appears that the "British war vessel" mentioned in the One World Magazine was the E-class cruiser Enterprise.
Twelve Swordfish bombers were launched from the carrier HMS Ark Royal, under cover from the Enterprise and other British cruisers, and attacked installations in the port of Cagliari.
The cruisers HMS Cornwall and HMS Dorsetshire were sunk, but miraculously, the Enterprise and two destroyers were able to rescue 1,122 of the 1,546 crewmen of the two unfortunate ships.

London, Nov. 17 - (C.P.) - A sturdy Irish captain - Fogarty Fegen - who went down with his ship, H.M.S. Jervis Bay, her guns blazing and her colors flying, was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously yesterday.
The Jervis Bay was sunk Nov. 5 as she challenged a powerful German raider in the mid-Atlantic.

After a period with the Channel Squadron, she sailed on 16 January 1860 from Portsmouth to take Rear Admiral Alexander Milne out to the West Indies, where he replaced Vice Admiral Sir Houston Stewart as Commander-in-Chief on the North America and West Indies station from 13 January 1860 (until 7 January 1864).

Of the three E-Class cruisers proposed at the end of World War 1, only two were ever completed, Euphrates being cancelled when the war with Germany ended in 1918.
