HM Bark Endeavour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HM Bark Endeavour was a small 18th century British sailing ship, famous for being the vessel commanded by Lt. (later Captain) James Cook, on his first voyage of discovery to the Pacific Ocean.
HM Bark Endeavour was originally a merchant collier named Earl of Pembroke, whose construction was completed by early 1768 at Whitby, North Yorkshire.
She was renamed Endeavour after a major refit at Deptford on the River Thames in 1768, her improvements including caulking the hull and adding a third deck to prepare her for her new role as an exploration vessel.

Within a few months of his return from his first voyage to the South Seas in HMS Endeavour, James Cook—newly promoted to Commander—was assigned to undertake a second voyage to determine the existence of a southern continent, or Terra Australis, long hypothesized by navigators and geographers.
As this would entail an extensive survey of the southern ocean, he was given two ships, Resolution, the flagship, and Adventure, which sailed under command of Commander Tobias Furneaux, a veteran of Captain Samuel Wallis's 1766-68 circumnavigation in HMS Dolphin.
Like Endeavour and Resolution, Adventure was originally a North Sea collier rigged as a bark; she was rerigged by the navy following her purchase in 1771.

This is the original document, in Cook’s handwriting, of his first exploration voyage in the Pacific on HMS Endeavour in 1768-71.
This is the key document which foreshadows British colonisation of Australia (which actually began in 1788) and presaged the tragic consequences for Australia’s indigenous peoples — the oldest surviving culture on Earth — who, under British law, were effectively deemed not to exist (the ‘terra nullius’ doctrine).
Cook’s journal is pre-eminent because it records the experiences and, to a lesser extent, the thoughts of the leader of the expedition, and the man who went on to become the greatest explorer in Pacific history.
