Eskimo ended her days as an accommodation and headquarters ship for minesweepers, wreck-disposal vessels, salvage craft which were clearing the Thames and Medway estuaries.

ESKIMO shot down one aircraft and later came to the assistance of the damaged battleship HMS IRON DUKE.
In March 1942, ESKIMO took part in the movements which screened convoys PQ8 and PQ12 and in the abortive sweep to intercept the German battleship TIRPITZ.
By May 8, the Axis armies in North Africa were defeated and ESKIMO took part in Operation Retribution, the effort to sink, burn or destroy enemy vessels passing through the Sicilian Narrows.

ESKIMO closed to within half a cable ready to board, but before the whaler had time to reach the submarine she rolled over and sank.

On the 11th September 1939 the Ark Royal with six destroyers left Scapa Flow, for an exercise west of the Orkneys, HM ships Firedrake, Foxhound, Faulknor, Eskimo and two other tribal destroyers were to do Anti U-boat sweeps and to give protection to the Ark Royal.
Erwin Prügel is alive today and has provided many of the photos, his daughter, Doris very kindly came to the HMS Firedrake Association memorial service for the Firedrake which was lost with the loss of 168 of her crew on the 17th December 1942.
In April 2002 Bob Lawrence 82 years of age, who was the Leading signalman aboard HMS Foxhound in September 1939, one of the destroyers involved in the detection and sinking of U39, the first U-boat to be sunk in World War II, visited Erwin Prügel at his home in Heimerdingen Germany.

When HMS Somali was completed, she spent most of January 1939 around Portland England carrying out torpedo and harbour exercises in severe weather.
Around Christmas 1941, HMS Somali, HMS Ashanti, HMS Bedouin and HMS Eskimo took part in another raid on the Lofoten Islands but their assault was curtailed by the presence of the German air force.
HMS Ashanti then took her crippled sister ship in tow, cruising at a slow 7 knots.

HMS Penelope was again damaged on the 18th of December 1941, as part of the British K force she, along with HMS Neptune, HMS Aurora, HMS Kandahar, HMS Lance, HMS Lively and HMS Havock encountered an Italian minefield off Tripoli.
HMS Penelope was repaired at Malta but was bombed during the repairs on 26 March 1942.
Joined H.M.S. Penelope in Portsmouth and after a week or so steaming off Portland and where, incidentally was issued with cold weather clothing, so we had a fair idea that we would be going somewhere warm and we were right, we were soon to be back in Gibraltar and operating in the Med.

Better luck was had in the south when the HMS Spearfish severely damaged the Lützow at midnight on the 11th, putting the ship out of commission for a year.
